Post subject: world wide web publishing service cannot be started automatically
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Hi! Hope some of you have seen this weird problem before. I have IIS
running on Win2000 server, somehow the startup type of WWW Publishing
service is always "disabled" -- If I change it to "manual" or
"automatic", the next time when server reboots, it's changed back to
"disabled". As a result, the service never starts up automatically
after server reboot. I also tried changing the startup type in
registry, but it didn't work either.
Both WWW Publishing and SMTP are dependent on IIS Admin service.
However, SMTP and IIS Admin can be set to "automatic" and they start
up fine after server reboot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Quan,

If your server is crashing or hanging you might want to
download our ReJuvin8 tool. It's free for the first
15-days. It can keep your site running despite problems.

It's designed to detect problems then restart or reboot.
It can restart ANY programs, services, or processes in
precise order. It doesn't fix bugs but it does give you some
breathing room while you are finding them. ReJuvin8 also
gives you email and telephone alert messages and graphic
status reports.

It can also test, alert, and report on URLs running anywhere
on any server on your net connection. So if you use multiple
servers you can use them to watch each other, too.

ReJuvin8 has both an automatic and a custom mode. In the
auto mode you make all the settings by pointing and
clicking. This will handle most applications.

The custom mode uses heartbeat synch files to get absolute
detection that key processes are working. Tools and
instructions are provided to help you do this. We also offer
customization as a contract service.

Charles

It sounds like you have something else that is disabling the WWW Publishing
service. To check:
1. Change WWW to Manual/Automatic
2. Start the WWW Service and check if IIS is working.
3. Reboot

If in #2, IIS runs, then the problem is that something is intentionally
disabling IIS on reboots... probably group policy or some other similar
automation.

Hi ,

My name is Michael Noto. Thank you for using the Microsoft IIS Newsgroups.
As I understand, the WWW service does not start automatically on reboot but
can be started manually without an error. Please let me know if this is not
the case.

Strange, we usually see the service will not start at all in a case like
this. Could we look at the properties of the WWW publishing service? On
the dependences tab, do we have anything besides IIS admin? On the Log on
tab, what is selected? I also would be interested in any errors or warnings
in the vent logs of the server too.

I hope this helps! If you have additional questions on this topic, please

Thanks David. You are right, actually I noticed that if I change the
startup type of WWW publishing service to automatic, then reboot
server, the service will run but with startup set to "disabled". If
the server reboots again, the service will not run. So it looks like
something is disabling the service after server reboot. There's no
problem with starting the service after change the type to manual or
auto.
I have put a script to set the startup type back to automatic -- the
script is scheduled to run at 2 minutes after server reboot
(supposedly that "something" has already made its change by that
time). And it does seem to work. Next thing, I'll need what that
"something" is...
Thank you all for the input! Happy New Year!
