I just went along to one of the old websites I used to take care of......The
one where I told the owner to shove his job up his arse for being such a
twat.....

Anyway, he's got someone else working on the site now, and they've changed
th edesign to a highly cluttered and confused layout.....There's hundreds of
dead links, and not a single product image displays......Looks like the
working of some young lad....You know how it is that everyone's nephew makes
great websites......

Anyway, the thing that made me howl with laughter was when I clicked on his
"Report An Error" link.......It didn't work......It threw up a 404.....

I wonder if this was intended as a highly ironic joke to keep his customers
amused while they surf his site, or if it's a genuine error.....And if it's
a genuine error, how does one report it?......

I have a similar story. I joined a local organization, and when they asked me if I could help I
volunteered to rewrite their site -- which at the time was basically a 1024x768 image someone threw
together with image maps for links on Geocities. Terrible site.

I spent about two weekends working on it, no one in the group could make-up their mind how they
wanted it to look so I was updating and changing things all the time. After about 6 months of
farting with it I pulled myself from the group, but the final site IMO looked great and was very
functional. That was 2 years ago, and I noticed about 2 months ago they totally changed the site.
Like your example they must have some kid writing it as it's terrible. I had a nice logo I created
that's now stretched out of proportion on the top of the entire page. Many links are 404 or just
programmed incorrectly. They also tried to rework most of my code as much of it is commented out in
the source.

What's bad is my site looked 10x better then what they have now... but they wanted a pro-level site
for something I volunteered to do. Not worth the hassle. I only planned on spending maybe 6-8
hours writing the site and maybe one hour a month with updates. The 6 months I maintained the site
I spent probably 15/hours a month.

I do write websites for non-profit companies or 'in memory of' websites often, and generally a thank
you or some homemade cookies are payment enough Smile Anyone else do this??? Just curious.

Take care,

It seems to work ok, you clicked 'report an error', it took you to an error site, then you
came here and reported the error!

Yep - me too!

I've had three customers who I've created websites for (static html stuff),
who after about a year decided they would make some changes to their
websites - and you've guessed it - they have a friend (or 'nephew') who they
would do it for them... could I please send them the server access details
etc...

Two weeks later, the sites are trashed - broken links, missing (or
unmatched) tags causing layout mayhem, graphics - rough as **** - just a
mess. In one instance they even left my sig in the footer - I had to ask
them to remove it. Quite apart from trashing something that I've put a lot
of work into, now I can't even use the sites for reference Sad

Humph!

I've got one of those out there. Of course, after all these years I
would do the whole thing very diferently. I wouldn't want my sig on it
now anyway.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Time to move on folk. I know it feels good but gloating is probably best
done in private.

stay away from non-profits and anyone advertising on Idealist.org
....I AM SERIOUS!!!...
this is how they do business:
they never hire _only_ one person to do anything, graphics, coding, whatever.
They give the same task/job/duties to
anyone and _everyone_ who responds to their ads.
why?
because %50 dont do anything, %25 do %50, %20 do it terribly, and only %5 do as
they ask. So they pick and choose whose work they accept and if your work aint
chosen, you've just wasted your time for nothing! There is no contract, no
payment.
STAY AWAY from NPOs(unless you are local dont even bother responding to their
ads)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

You seem to have a very warped view of the way non-profit organisations
work. You may have had a bad experience with one, but let me assure you:
that's not how they all operate.

I work full-time for a large-ish national charity and we mainly operate
like any other business would -- except that donations are a major source
of our income.

I can agree with that. The NP market appears to be cleanly split into two
camps: Those that want everything for nothing - yep, I've had my fingers
burnt by them and those that are properly funded with a proper budget for
every project. Finding which you are dealing with is (a very important)
part of the punter qulifying process.
