I'd say that the main thing you need to ensure is that they can see what
your site offers fairly immediately. Algebra covers a multitude of sins (I
did physics at uni and I still see all forms of maths as a vice) and they
may well have very specific things they are looking for. If those things
aren't immediately obvious then people who have arrived without knowing
anything about your site will probably leave without exploring.
Ideally what you need to do is work out what "routes" through the site are
most popular and make it very easy to see immediately where to follow
them, and look at what is being searched for in specific terms and offer
easy ways of finding appropriate pages for those searches (on the
unjustified assumption that the people who simply type "algebra" into the
browser will be looking for the same things as the people who use a
specific search term in a search engine). Finally you might try
highlighting specific pages or sections of the site and checking to see
whether they are popular.
