Post subject: /var/www/html/_ file requests?????
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)
Could someone enlighten me as to what is going on here. I seem to be
gettting heaps of this sort of entry in my error log. The client IP address
resolves to some mob called srv.vibehosting.com

I don't have any porn on my site, so it is unlikely that these sites are
actually the referers.

Referer spam. It happens.

Why? A lot of people automatically generate stats pages from logs. For
example:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://ctserver.uchicago.edu/webusage/usage_200401.html" target="_blank">http://ctserver.uchicago.edu/webusage/usage_200401.html</a>

These stats pages often include a list of the top referers:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://ctserver.uchicago.edu/webusage/usage_200401.html#TOPREFS" target="_blank">http://ctserver.uchicago.edu/webusage/usage_200401.html#TOPREFS</a>

Now if a spammer spoofs thousands of referer headers to a site (such as
ctserver.uchicago.edu), he'll get linked to by the stats pages. This will
count as an inbound link to his website and will boost his rating on
Google.

Referer spam is becoming quite prevalent:

I was more interested in the objective of the exercise. Is this trying to
exploit a known problem?
