I see vBulletin charge $160 for their forum software.

Considering that there are perfectly decent free forums available, I am
wondering how they justify this price?

Or in other words, what's so special about vBulletin?

Just noticed Invision Power Board is $199, so vBulletin is cheap!!

Personally, I think the fewer bells and whistles, the better.

Sometimes, if you pay for it - it is more reliable, stable and supported....

Incidentally a Government Office recently paid 10,000 pounds for one that
never worked.

what's so special about windows? what's so special about ms office?
guess it's just that "ahh, you want software, i have software. let's make a
deal."-thing or the "why would you give something away for free if you can
sell it"-idea.
imho most forum softwares are the same, have the same options and all that.
talking 'bout forums: a mod_perl-aware board is right now beeing developed
at perl-community.de - it's looking nice so far and will surely be open at
no charge. think of it as a yabb without all the bugs and the ugly code Wink<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

When you can get Linux for nothing, nothing!

I think you missed my point. There are perfectly good free forums
available. I can understand paying a *little* more, but $160 - $200
strikes me as being pretty steep.

I therefore wondered what the *huge* or *groundbreaking* advantage was to
justify this. None as far as I can see.

That's exactly what I think. The huge difference (well, is it really an
advantage?) is, that they sell the script and don't give it away for free.
Does there have to be any other? Wink
Well, ok, getting serious. I have no clue about international law but at
least in germany you pick up some kind of guarantee when buying something.
opensource and freeware usually tries to say "comes as is, no guarantee",
commercial software sellers can't do that (well, they can, but the next
judge will have fun with 'em). That is basically, if you buy the script, a
bug fucks up your business, you can sue them for compensation. That is a
major advantage that I see...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I agree, as long as they have the features you want <G>.

For instance - right now I have a customer who wants a board with the
ability to reply by email. I know about DiscusWare, but there are some
other things I don't like about it (like how they handle security).
Additionally, it would be nice if it were to run on MySql (like
PHPBoard).

Its about $85/year for a lease.

I just launched <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.ausinvestor.com" target="_blank">www.ausinvestor.com</a> as a vbulettin board a few days ago. I'm
starting to get google income so it will pay for itself quickly.

Comparing phpBB to the latest version of vbulletin is like comparing a
volkswagen to a ferrari. The vbulletin control panel is huge & has all the
bells & whistles.

Then, you're probably not their target audience. There's a whole world out
there that still buys their software off the shelf ... they don't know or
trust open source or free software. They also don't understand the
internet or computers enough to make their software work so they buy
commercial for the tech support.

I've had alot of clients that turned their noses up to perfectly fine, if
not better free software because it wasn't a brand name Smile

1) Support
2) Guarantee
3) Accountability
4) Tax deductible
5) Scalability

How much do you charge to add these to PHPBB?

use PhpBB, the best one. vBulletin is more stable, but you need huge CPU
power to run it. It sucks too much resource

actually, I don't know if phpBB is at the top, anymore. phpBB's database
is bloated unless you know how to do some custom changes, and it will
get bigger and bigger with every post.

I've moved a few phpBB forums to SMF. From what I can tell, this is the
new version of Yabb SE. Still in "beta", but awesome. All my users
loved the switch. <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.simplemachines.org" target="_blank">www.simplemachines.org</a>
