This is true (on both counts). So, have you identified a niche for
yourself yet?

Based on your ambiguous questions....

I would like to start a web design business, and wanted to know if you
all had any advice? Also, where can I get information about:

1. contracts - what should I guarantee them in return for their fee?
2. pricing - how much? what's the price structure? Is there
maintenance involved? For a fee or per update, or just a monthly fee?
What about deposits, how much should i charge up front?

anything else you can think of would be appreciated. I'm probably
forgetting a lot.

and your resulting responses....

i am a professor of computer science, but I have done plenty of web
pages. Matter of fact, I redesigned our divisions web pages, and have a
site of my own up and running using PHP/XOOPS. Web page design is no
big deal, it's the business part I am concerned with.

With the regs here trying to drudge out info on your abilities, as that's
the guiding light to the advice you requested....

and your response...

i don't have shit to prove to y'all... if you don't wanna help, just put
the thread on ignore and keep it moving. thank you.

Then my advice is....

1. contracts - what should I guarantee them in return for their fee?

You should guarantee them the work to be completed, of course.

2. pricing - how much? what's the price structure? Is there
maintenance involved? For a fee or per update, or just a monthly fee?
What about deposits, how much should i charge up front?

Depends on your abilities and worth of the project.
Whereas it would seem your the only thing you're willing to divulge is your
Divisions Web Pages ( a secret ) and Xoops which anyone with a mouse can
auto install and admin....

I would say you should consider giving it away for free. Wink

'Course, that's just my two cents.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

no I have not. I'm currently working with a nonprofit on their website,
to get more experience working with clients. I'm also knowledgeable
about Education related matters. So, I guess that would be two things I
could think about.

ROTFL!

Ha ha ha, you'll be expecting civility next!

Really, though. This is not the place to ask how to run a business!

but still offer advice to "Doug", only I'd say "fuck off you wanker"

Ahh - no, keep an open mind and your niche will find you. In the
mean-time keep banging away.

A niche is not necessarily a vertical market, it could be a skill-set or a
design paradigm.

What type of non-profit? tin-rattlers or professionally funded? it makes
a big difference to how they value the work you do for them. I've worked
with both types and won't ever again go near the tin-rattlers unless it's
a useful way to assist a cause I have faith in.

That's a very good point. The one I'm working with now is mainly funded
from donations.
