Hello All,

I would like to start a web design business, and wanted to know if you
all had any advice? Also, where can I get information about:

1. contracts - what should I guarantee them in return for their fee?
2. pricing - how much? what's the price structure? Is there
maintenance involved? For a fee or per update, or just a monthly fee?
What about deposits, how much should i charge up front?

anything else you can think of would be appreciated. I'm probably
forgetting a lot.

Forging a path through the alt.www.webmaster jungle, armed only with a
rusty Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.2)
Gecko/20040804 Netscape/7.2 (ax), Doug burst into a clearing and said:

How do you do?

To start a business you need in-depth knowledge of two things:
o the trade/service/market you will operate
o how to run a business

They can be bought (hired) if you have capital.
They can be learned if you have time.

 > ...
 > anything else you can think of would be appreciated.

Everything else is ancillary to the above.

 > I'm probably forgetting a lot.

Then you are not ready.

i am a professor of computer science, but I have done plenty of web
pages. Matter of fact, I redesigned our divisions web pages, and have a
site of my own up and running using PHP/XOOPS. Web page design is no
big deal, it's the business part I am concerned with.

I was hoping for some guidance from this group, but apparently that's
asking for too much.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

it's not, but you only have to take a brief look around to see that a
grasp of trivial site building techniques is apparently beyond the
capabilities of most hacks.

Using a pointed stick and some pebbles, Doug scraped this into the dirt:

"Hey Boo Boo, I'm smarter than the average hack" Smile
