Post subject: My site busts on AOL browser
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I am running MovableType version 4.1 with modified templates and CSS
on my blog: http://www.geofffox.com.

I just got the following screen cap from a blog reader:
http://members.aol.com/jazz6462/dscf0001.jpg

Originally, I had a problem with IE6 as well. I solved it by reducing
the CSS width of the center column.

In this photo, the center column, the last rendered, improperly starts
where the right column ends and in the main column. In Firefox, IE7
and now IE6, it begins at the top and in its proper space.

Not only can't I figure out how to solve this... I'm not even sure how
to troubleshoot it!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Can you fix the HTML validation errors,
see http://validator.w3.org/
It might not solve the problem, but I think it is the first step
in troubleshooting.

I will - though the vast majority of them are somewhat arcane points
which, though technically wrong, are properly interpreted by all
current browsers. But, yes, they're wrong and I will fix them. It's
going to take time, because some of these are systemic through the
thousands of pages I have.

In the meantime, I think this problem is unrelated to these errors.

BTW - amazingly, I misspelled my own name in the original post!

All the best,

Another thing, again it might not solve anything,
and I do not use AOL browser,
but I got rid of some layout problems in some other browser
by moving all the style information from
inline style attributes to the css file.

I have just integrated the inline styles back into my sitewide CSS. I
will ask the person who saw this to doublecheck.

I wish there were browser simulators!

I am told it is still there (www.geofffox.com)... and, of course, I
can't see it!

My reader writes:

Hi Geoff..
It's weird. The grey panel is now off the "it is fixed" blog post, but
the grey panel has reappeared onto the Hockey and the Earthquake
postings and onto the bottom paragraph of the Still Winter post. I
use the AOL browser but I also have a secondary browser (AT$T Yahoo)
and when I look at it on there it appears the same way.
Laura

Any more ideas?

I'm with you Gary, but the idea of posting to a blog is to be read.
It is my obligation to be compatible, not theirs.

That being said, no one supports Windows 3.1 or my Commodore 64.

I'm continuing my quest for a solution.

It's said that you can't make everyone happy, but it's important to try.
Certainly, there must be a threshold below which you don't spend significant
time trying to achieve compatibility. How many other visitors using the same
browser do you expect?

I get around 1,000 page reads per day (though well over 2,500 per day
since I was 'hit' - see www.geofffox.com/oops.php). I have heard from
two AOL browser users. There are probably more hidden in the shadows.

As much as anything, this website is an exercise for me. I haven't
taken a computer course since 1968. I'd like to think I still have
some skills.

That's funny. I did it to show courtesy. Go figure.

The link below is my first posting on Usenet. It is from 1993. We
made up the rules before you got here. You are forgiven for your
insolence.

Hi Jerry -

Yeah, we could have had jerry.com or geoff.com and made a fortune.
Who knew what we were missing?

My first use of a networked computer (called timeshare then) was 1967,
playing Wumpus et al. I was in high school. It was at the Brooklyn
Polytechnic Institute. The output was printed on a teletype which
could punch and read tape.

Chaddy - The graphic I posted of her screen looked to be 800x600. I
can only guess the age of the browser. Remember, people with 28.8 (or
slower) connections don't want to spend time on long downloads.
