Post subject: server side fix for Office password prompts in linked documents?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

We link to Word and sometimes XLS docs from our IIS5 websites. Seems Office
(2000 or 2002) will always ask user for a password after closing the
document. Q225234 "You Are Prompted for a Password When You Open an Office
Document in a Browser" says ths is fixed in Office 2000 Sr1a, but I'd like
to fix it from the server side. We don't have much influence on client
service packs...

We use Frontpage for editing all sites, and have Integrated Windows + Anon
authentication enabled for all sites. Can we somehow disable authentication
on all office documents, but leave it for the web site itself? Any other
solutions to getting rid of password prompts from our web server to hapless
web users?

Thanks in advance...

Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

The fix from the server side is that you have to open up the docs from a patched-up version of Office and/or Excel, and resave them. Do not let authors edit
them unless they have a patched-up version or later of Office.

This was an Office bug; you can ping those guys as well.

Thank you. I hope this information is helpful.
