Post subject: What is restarting inetinfo.exe?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

I are upgrading from IIS 4.0 under NT to IIS 5.1 under WIN2K. In the 4.0 world one of our own services detected if inetinfo.exe died and restarted it. After a fresh install of WIN2K and IIS 5.1 I notice that if inetinfo.exe dies it is restarted by the system.

At least it does on most of our development machines. My problem is that this behaviour has gone away on several developers boxes. I presume that our software is doing something to modify the default WIN2K behaviour. The WWW Publishing Services Properties/Recovery tab is set to "Take No Action" on all failures.

Can anybody suggest where else I can look for for settings that control this behaviour.

Many thanks

Clarification:

When I stated that inetinfo.exe is restarted by 'the system', I meant the operating system - not our own software. Under Win2k/IIS 5.1, inetinfo is restarted even without our software running. I'd like to understand what controls the WIN2k behaviour, so that I can decide whether to use the WIN2K functionality (and remove the equivalent functionalty from our own software), or whether to disable the WIN2K behaviour and use our existing restart functionality.

So I'd like to understand why WIN2K can restart inetinfo on some of our machines, but not others.

THanks

problem solved:

I had looked at the Services properties for the WWW publishing service, but not at the Services setting for the IIS Admin service. The IIS Admin service Recovery tab was set to run C:\WINNT\System32\iisreset.exe, which restarts the inetinfo service.

Just a note, it sounds like you've got another problem that is just masked
by this. Let us know if you'd like to work on those.
