I am new to developing web sites, new to using shared hosters like
godaddy.com. In the week I have been with godaddy I have had emails
bounce that were sent to me from gmail and yahoo accounts, now my mail,
ftp and web are down since 8pm est weds.
I am starting to regret using godaddy for web hosting. Their tech
support is fine as long as you go thru the 10-15 minute process of
calling and waiting to speak to someone. In the matter of this
outage, I cant send an email to them asking what is going on, they will
not send me a periodic status of the outage reporting when service will
be resumed.
Is this just a case of you get what you pay for?

my domain registrar had been network solutions. when I started hosting
on godaddy, there were so many problems with the dns, mx records, cname
records that the GoDaddy techs advised me to have godaddy be the
registrar. The problem is that once that registrar transfer went thru,
the DNS servers of my domain at godaddy was automatically moved to the
parked DNS ( whatever that is ). for some reason, that took my email,
ftp and web off line.
the email based tech support of godaddy really stinks. a customer can
call and talk to a tech in 10 minutes. but emailed questions or
problems take a minimum of 6 hrs to be responded to. and the responses
are completed mechanical, nothing that really addresses the problem.

Domain hosting and domain registry are vastly different services. I recently
found out about GoDaddy (client used it, I generally ignored it previously),
and as far as domain registration and management goes, it seems pretty
decent. I also like the ability to handle the DNS records directly.
But for hosting, well - I don't know. I've been using American Internet at
www.amhosting.com for many years now and have had nothing but the best
experience with them. And I only pay $5/month for almost every page I've
ever hosted with them.
For some reason, hosting my site with the registrar just goes down wrong for
me. >> Stay informed about: how reliable is godaddy.com?? |

yes - that is a problem. it's ok to set up a new domain with defaults
like that but transfers should bring the nameserver entries with them.

there is a lot to like about godaddy. Their support is actually pretty
good if you go the route of making a toll call. It is their support
via email that totally failed me on this matter. It took them half the
day to respond, then their response looked like it had been selected
from a list of options - it did not help me understand and solve the
problem.
Why does a GoDaddy want its customers to phone in their problems
instead of emailing them? I would think email resolution would be more
efficient use of the tech's time.

I think that's the case whenever you deal with a big company. A big company
would hire tons of support people who get a quick training and put on the
job to answer calls. They are unable to answers non standard questions.
Plus typically they reply with canned replies. Many times they are useless.
If you deal with a small company you will get help from someone who
probably knows the ins and outs of issues and "touched" the hardware and
software so you will get fast and reliable support.

That's why I use EasyDNS (well, I started because I needed my domain
redirected, but I stay because of their customer service). I have
never gotten a canned response from them, and the few times when I've
need to move to phone support they've been pleasant and knowledgeable.
IMHO, it's definitely been worth the few dollars more/year (and I say
this as someone on an extremely tight budget).
I use GoDaddy for a "throw-away" site for which I also use free
hosting, but for the site that matters I use EasyDNS.

@l41g2000cwc.googlegroups.com:
i have to say, you catch more flies with honey. for these cheap hosts, the
burden is on you to figure out their setup and configuration, work with the
tools they give you and work out the problem. send helpfull emails to tech
support that politely alert them to a problem or difficulty and offer any
ideas or diagnostics you think should be helpfull. in other words, talk to
them like they are US not THEM.
that tech has twelve nasty-grams in his queue and 3 happy-grams. his shift
is over in a half hour. who do you think is getting attention?
and when you get a tech from a cheap host on the phone, the first thing you
want to do is ask how their day is going. if they say they are getting
pounded, tell them you are in no hurry and to take a deep breath and relax.
that tech has just identified you as one of US not THEM.
get the idea? >> Stay informed about: how reliable is godaddy.com?? |

GoDaddy have recently begun a new service that is, in effect, a
spam source. The host un-confirmed email lists. Your problems are
just beginning.
For the domains I administer, only the domain role accounts can
receive email from GoDaddy IP-space. So, if you host a domain in
GoDaddy space, expect your mail to be blocked or bit-bucketed.
At one time GoDaddy was a respected spam intolerant registrar. I
guess the suits decided that the revenue stream from registration
was inadequate and have themselves become spam supporters.
