Post subject: Any reliable free (no adverts), web hosting? Portland Com' (UK) has gone!!
Archived from groups: alt>freewebhosting (more info?)

Hello folks,

I've been operating a free service for my local community (UK), for the last
three years. Using free software (recommended by your good selves, many
thanks), a lot of my free time and free hosting.

But recently I've been having problems uploading to Portland Communications
Ltd. It now seems that they are no longer in business! The new owners
(Intrascape Communications Ltd), are continuing, but are to charge for
sub-domain hosting.

Boy-Oh-Boy has this given me some more work to do!!

Anybody here know of a reliable no adverts free hosting, for my site that
uses about 3MBytes of space.

In much appreciation, Michael.

hi Michael
i have just the thing for you
the free host i use offers
250 MB of disk space and 100 GB bandwidth. They also
have cPanel control panel which is amazing. Moreover,
there is no advertising on your pages.
You can register here:
http://www.000webhost.com/?id=16017

oh i am not sure if you use php or not but they have full php support with
no restrictions.
enjoy

Many thanks to you John Smith, I'll check it out. I don't, as yet use PHP,
but thanks for the thought.
It's always good to get a recommendation from a host user.

Regards, Michael.

I had exactly the same problem!!. The only comparible replacement i could
find at the time was a U.S. one.
awardspace.com. They are good but I would ideally like to find another
reliable Uk provider like portland.

Thanks for that mike,

I'll have a look at awardspace.com.
UK based would be perfect but, we mustn't be too unappreciative of our kind
cousins across the pond, now must we Wink
Just as a matter of interest, how did you redirect traffic from
youroldwebsite.port5.com to your new website, given that we can't upload or
contact Portland? There must be a process here that I know nothing about.

Your thoughts are much appreciated, Michael.

Not possible. Mine and your .port5.com address is gone for good and
cannot be redirected or used..
Fortunately i was also using a domain name (£5 from 123reg) so i changed
my domain name settings from portland to awardspace and my website
is now back up and running.

Hi Mike, again,

I wish I were as wise a-man as you. Good to hear you got it sorted, well
done.
You say "not possible", but I thought there is a way via something to-do
with DNS, my new host adjusting some address numbers etc. Re-routing the
traffic.
Anybody any ideas here?

Many thanks, Michael.
