Post subject: who owns raw web files? Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Hello all -
A client, with no warning whatsoever, recently decided to bring web dev
and maintenance "in-house". Just prior to this announcement, they asked
for and received a complete backup of the whole web site. They then
cancelled my ftp access, then they told me the news.
Up to this point, they have not asked for any of the "raw" files - i.e.
the .psd and .ai files with layers that I created to make gifs (for
headings, bullets, artwork, line art, banners, etc.) or raw photo scans
for the site.
My question is this: Who "owns" these files? Does this company have any
legal right to my raw files? Has anyone ever encountered this before?
Pls. reply with sage advice/experience to
news_AT_flyingsquirrels_DOT_com
Many thanks! >> Stay informed about: who owns raw web files? |

If you are in the US, unless you had a contract stating that you were doing
"work for hire" then you own the copyright on anything you designed.

That depends on your contract, and the laws in your country. Get
yourself some actual legal advice .

UK must be different. A contract can be verbal.

Show your contract to a lawyer, if it's not absolutely clear.

Be carefull.... Verbal contracts are only as good as the contractee's
collective memories.....I've done jobs based on a verbal contract before
today, only to fin at a later date that the client has a completely
different idea of what work I agreed to do, or how much they agreed to pay
me.....The problem is, once the work's done, how do you prove otherwise?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: who owns raw web files? |
