Post subject: provider for streaming video?
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

My business partner for my online course has decided to leave the
business of offering online courses... he was hosting the streaming
video portion.

So now I need to find a provider who offers realplayer streaming...
and that is all I need. I don't need email, domain hosting, cgi, bells
or whistles... just a place to put my realmedia files, so I can link
to them. The rest of the course is happily hosted elsewhere.. with
tina @ ah ..

I'll need about 605 mb of storage, FTP to upload the files and not
much bandwidth... there are not many students. Tuition is minimal,
more of a labour of love than a commercial enterprise. I'm offering
the students the option to buy a CD with the whole course on it,
including the vids, and most are going for it, so that leaves just a
few members viewing a few files per week.

Can anyone recommend a streaming host... or perhaps someone with a
large, partly unused account could rent me a corner of it?

The course is Fire Serpent Tantra www.fire-serpent.com, if it
matters... Spiritual stuff, Kundalini awakening.

Not looking for a sitedesign review, I know my skills are kind of
lame... Wink self taught, hand coded... but adequate for my users needs.

Thanks...

Realmedia is designed to stream based on files. Any webserver can stream
these files. What format are they in .rm ? Do you have the .ram files as
well? If not they are easy to create.

Contact me if you have any more questions

Thank you for your response, Eric. I wish you were right.

As I understand it, from what my biz partner has told me, the
realplayer streaming technology requires the server to install
realplayer software, and get a licence from realplayer.

Tech support at affordablehost informed me that streaming is not
supported... which is unfortunate, as I have enough empty space on the
account to hold the files, and it would be preferred, above getting a
whole other account just for the streaming. Not really surprising
though, they are an inexpensive service, and I'm told the streaming
licence is quite expensive.

I have ram files, smi files, and rm files... all the lessons (5Cool
have a separate rm file for the title credits, and some vids are split
into 10 minute sections, so the smi file is essential.

If not streaming, I would be OK with allowing my students to
download the files and play them from their hard drive, assuming they
have enough ram to do that.... Having multiple files, it makes it
difficult to do a simple download and play. At least, I don't know
how to make it happen! Having the students download a zipped file,
unpack it, etc... seems inconvenient. Most are not tech savvy.

Unfortunately, I'm working against a deadline, my biz partner will
cease offering the vids in one week. Hopefully I can sort something
out before then, so there will be no interruption of service for paid
members.

Or maybe, I'm just stupid, and you are right... but, how?

I went back to the realplayer website, looked at their tutorial vid,
and it agrees with you... but their ramfiles look different than the
ones I was given, mine just link to the smi.

I tried a test file, it isn't working... I thought perhaps the rm
file was corrupted, so I uploaded it again, same result. General
error.

AH told me "We do not have streaming capabilities on the Cpanel
servers" Sad

Contact http://host.dnsmadeeasy.com
They can configure a server for your needs and allow you to set up
transfering.
They may even be able to put your files on their shared servers if you
do not change the files often.
