Post subject: personal web server for XP home edition?
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I just got a new machine and realized it has XP home edition which doesn't
have PWS (personal web server) or IIS (internet information services) which
are used to create a virtual web server on you local machine.

I have used this mainly to view web pages under development.

Can anyone recommend a freeware program that can do this?

thanks
gary

thanks, i'll try apache. is it pretty easy to use?

I just need something REALLY simple; all I want to do is tell it where my
home directory is, and then I need to know what to type in the browser to
get there. so the simpler the better.

Xitami is very simple and a breeze to install under windows,
but the last I checked it doesn't handle server side scripting.
This may have changed by now.

You are not limited to XP. I suggest you make the machine
a dual boot system and install Ubuntu or Mepis. Either
will just drop in without disturbing your Win system, and they
don't take up a lot of room on the HD. When you boot you'll get to
choose the op system you want to work in. Linux can read anything
you've done on the Windows partition, or you can create an extra
FAT32 partition that both can read and write to for shared application
data. It depends on your site provider, but Linux is likely to be
a closer match to that system if you want an exact copy on your machine.

No, it's a swine Cool But chances are you're going to use it for the
live hosting, so you're going to need to learn most of its config
anyway.

(Actually it's not bad. Config is powerful, so not trivial, but the
core product is simple and well behaved)
