Hello,
I am helping build a web site for a small business that sells
home-made jewelry. We are searching for a reliable service that can
process/validate credit card orders as well as provide some shopping
cart functionality. Everyone knows about PayPal, and I just recently
heard of this service 2checkout.com. I was wondering if 2checkout.com
or a comparable service is worth pursuing or should I just go with
PayPal?

Thanks for any insights, - Dave

Dave,

I would really consider what your expected sales are going to before
going towards a all-in-one solutions like 2checkout.com.

Can you say how much a typical transaction will be and how many a
month you are expecting?

btw, paypal.com now accepts credit card purchases without forcing
people to sign up for a membership. Because of this, my second
2checkout.com account (the Version 2) sits and collects dust. They
have many bugs to work out, before I can even integrate it into a
site.

BTW, <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.mypaysystems.com" target="_blank">www.mypaysystems.com</a> is 2checkout.com's closest competitor(from
what I gathered from newsgroups and forums). Good luck with them,
I've frequently asked them many times with presales questions, and no
reply, or replies trying to get someway to get your phone number.

Looking forward to your reply,

tom

Only for US-based businesses, and only from US-based customers. That
may or may not be a consideration for you.

Ah good point. I was sharing what I was going through. If he's
non-US there are many other payment services that should be available
to him as well.

Also, nice thing abotu Alexa ratings, they show you reviews of the
site, and what other people recommend if they don't like it:

You raise some excellent points. This is a small, one person business
and I would be surprised if sales hit more than 50 transactions per
month in the first few months. I haven't been told amounts, but
probably the avg. transaction wouldn't exceed $100. We are in the US
and also expect all sales to be in the US. Going forward (next
coulple of years), we will want to reconsider this assumption.

Great info about 2checkout.com. I had also read some discouraging
reviews about it on this and other newsgroups. And you know it's
funny about mypaysystems.com because I poured over that site before my
post and I'll be damned if I can figure out what their transaction
rates are -- they don't seem to list them. I interpret this to mean
they are not competitive.

Thanks for your response, - Dave

You might want to go to <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.webhostingtalk.com" target="_blank">www.webhostingtalk.com</a> to see what people
there have to say about the systems you are considering.

I have a client with a "brick-n-click" type business. He processes all his
trasactions in his store. Orders that are taken via web site are sent via
email. CC numbers are split so that part of the information is sent via
email and the other part is retrievied via secure link from an
administrative page. Processing via terminal is cheaper per transaction
than processing over the web.

Sounds like he's taking time to use a 'security through obscurity'
approach to his clients information, but does he have something
inplace between the client and the system like SSL?

later,

Tom
