Chris,
Very good information, just that using gateways and own merchant
accounts are expensive for a new startup. I would contridict what you
said about paypal and 2CO. I would go with paypal fast, since no
startup fees or monthly charges. PP now accepts credit card offers
without forcing people to sign-up. Once the bugs have been worked
out, go with PP, then work on driving taffic to your site(SEO,
Advertising, etc), and when traffic/transactions move up to your own
merchant account and verisign or authorize net.
Funny thing about verisign and authoize, their solution to avoid
spendinng time building you own check out page, with SSL, is exactly
like a PP payment solution. They make it possible to send customers
off to their site too, just that now you are still responsible for
your own merchant account setup.
But again, for eveyone very good information Chris, but for the new
startup, I would spend little time at first setting up the check out
process, and use PayPal [only if you have to, use 2 CO

]. Then you
can spend more time on driving traffic to your site, and working out
the kinks.
Good luck eveyone,
