Slipstreamed XP SP2 installed and running fine on clean hard drive.

No problems until I try to install IIS:

Copy error:
Setup cannot copy the file staxmem.dll
....insert "Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD"...

So I insert CD, browse to i386 where staxmem resides but am continually
prompted for the file.

If I skip this file, I get same prompt for admexs.dll etc. etc.

Have tried redownloading the SP and pointing to extracted i386, still get
same errors
Have tried "updating" XP by rerunning SP2 setup, then pointing to
c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386, still get same errors

Defininitely bemused...

I am also having this problem. XP Pro... installed SP2... tryed to
install IIS and get the exact problem with staxmem.dll. I do not have a
CD though, I just downloaded the patch and installed it. The default
directory for the prompt for staxmem.dll is c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

Any luck with this one yet?

Thank goodness I'm not the only one. I've been having the exact same
problem! I've been pulling my hair out.

The weirdest thing about the problem is it seems to be machine depenent.
On some machines, it works no problem but on others the problem crops up
(exact same image). Also, I've discovered it's not just IIS but any of
the Add/Remote Windows Components.

If anybody finds a solution to this, please post. Thanks!

I'm also having this problem. Does anyone have a solution
for this yet?

In the system event log I have a corresponding entry from
Windows File Protection saying:

"The system file c:\windows\system32\staxmem.dll could not
be copied into the DLL cache. The specific error code is
0x00000000 [The operation completed successfully.
]. This file is necessary to maintain system stability."

So why is WFP rejecting the SP2 file?

I have solved the problem when I run
esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb

Then the setup worked correctly.

Good luck

This solution worked a treat - many thanks.

Stumped no more.

I was able to run 'esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb'
on my Windows XP Pro Laptop and was then able to successfully install
IIS.

Thanks a bunch for the help!

BTW, the IIS Service recently wasn't able to start. When I looked in
'Services' it had a permanent status of 'Starting' and I was unable to
use the Web Server on my laptop (I do web development) so I ran
'esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb' again and now the
web server service starts automatically and all is working fine.

I had the same problem. I then ran esentutl /p
%windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb, and it was able to copy all of
the files correctly without a hitch. It stated the component
installation was successful, and prompted me to click "finish". All
seemed well. However...

After clicking to finish it, a box saying "XP Setup..." hung there on my
screen. It simply stayed there. After 15-20 minutes (long after it was
acting suspect), I brought up Task Manager. The setup was supposedly
still running -- and no "Not Responding" status. So I gave it more
time; literally a couple of hours. In the meantime, I was able to
access other programs on my computer with no problem or slowdown. The
"XP Setup" would not go away, even hours after it had supposedly
completed, so I had to end the process the task via Task Manager.

After several reboots and several more attempts to uninstall (it had
shown IIS as being checked (installed already?) in the Windows Component
Wizard) and install IIS, I still get the same XP Setup hangup every
time. I looked in the Administrative Tools, and no IIS. But strangely,
I see Inetinfo.exe in the running processes in Task Manager. My guess?
IIS had actually installed correctly, but since it never completed the
XP Setup process fully, Windows does not recognize it and doesn't show
it in the Admin Tools list, and therefore I have no way of accessing it.

Does anybody have anysuggestions on what to do?

I called microsoft on this. They admited it was a bug. They sent me
this information:

Solution 1:

1. Run "esentutl /g %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb" to see if
the DB is

corrupted.

2. If so, follow KB 278316

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;278316

3. Reboot if necessary

Solution 2:

1. Create an empty folder on your harddrive called something like
"c:\WinXp"

(name doesn’t really matter. Just make sure it is empty).

2. Copy the i386 folder off your original WinXP CD into your new empty
folder.

3. Put your WinXPSP2 CD in your drive.

4. Open a CMD prompt and change to the location of XPSP2.exe

5. Type "xpsp2.exe /integrate:c:\WinXp"

6. Attempt to install IIS again.

7. When it prompts for files point it to "c:\WinXP"

Good Luck
