Post subject: install Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) on windows XP Professional
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Hello,

On my new XP-Pro system I need to install IIS to run
FrontPage properly. When I try to install IIS a req is
made for install components on service pack 1, which I
don't have [physically] but it is installed on my system.
I did d/l the Network update SP 1-a hoping it would have
IIS but the required install components were still
missing.

Is there someone who knows where I can d/l a 'full'
version of SP 1 which does contain the files required for
the IIS server?

Thanx in advance,

Larry

I am having the same problem. I need to reinstall IIS6 to
XP Pro. I did an uninstall and now I can't reinstall it
from my original XP Pro setup disk. It keeps asking for
files that are on the SP1 disk. How do I get around this?

This will be a bit messy - you say you downloaded the Service Pack 1 network
install file? Good.

You can extract this .exe. into the entire service pack setup files, by
doing:

c:\>xpsp1_en_x86 -x

and you'll be prompted to extract the Service Pack files somewhere. Choose a
directory someplace. Now rerun the IIS setup from Add/Remove programs. When
it asks you for a SP1 file, browse to the folder where you extracted service
pack 1, and look in the i386 folder. When it wants files from your original
install disk, browse to your CD-ROM drive.

For the longer term, you can get around this by "slip-streaming" service
pack 1 into your original install disk, so that you don't need to keep SP1
hanging around on your hard disk. You can find instructions on how to
slip-stream SP1 into your original files, and then make a new bootable CD
here:
http://bink.nu/xpbootcd/

Cheers
Ken

I saw this issue here at work from a customer that called in:

First, you need to determine how you got XP installed on your machine; from the manufacturer, or did you do it.
Next, ensure that if the manufacturer did it, or a computer reseller, that they gave you the exact CD image that was used to install the
OS.

There are versions of XP now slip-streamed with SP1, so after an install of the OS, and a final reboot, you will see sp1 installed on the
box. Now, you have to have to slip-streamed image to add/remove any windows components, including IIS.

My customer had bought his box from a local retailer. They installed XP with SP1 slip-streamed, and they have him the XP cd (not slip-
streamed). He could never add/remove any windows components until they gave him the correct image, and then he could install IIS.

So it is not actually asking you for the sp1 cd for xp, but rather the XP SP1 cd, or in other terms, the slip-streamed version of XP with
SP1, which is the entire OS with sp1 updates already in the image.

I hope I have explained this clearly.

Thank you. I hope this information is helpful.
