I've seen countless posts about people who, after deciding to switch hosts, realized that their domain is registered in the name of their web host and they have no control over it. Remember most free/cheap hosts are sponsored by onsite advertising - and many charge extra for support (even if their "support" barely speaks English). Many cheap hosts use subdomains of a community website, rather than your proprietary domain name.
