I hope someone out there can help me with this.
I have a website that has been up for the past several years with the same
provider. Recently, I have gotten myself set up with DSL and have had my
provider assign me a static IP. I have a machine running NT 4.0 Server with
IIS. I also have Exchange Server set up. I would like to start hosting my
site and my email on my own machine, but am uncertain where I go from here.
I'm assuming I have to load DSN on my NT Server machine, and go to Network
Solutions and point the site to my server. Is that all there is to it?
Thanks in advance.

ajb,
Please ask this at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.webhostingtalk.com." target="_blank">http://www.webhostingtalk.com.</a> They have a forum where
you can ask about hosting websites. I'm sure you'll get more help there.

hi andy,
aside from this month (im moving to montana today) ive been hosting my own
sites at home on my cable connection. first you will need DNS. you can set
up your own dns server on your same webserver if you want (since you have a
static ip), or you can use a third party dns service such as directdns
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.directnic.com/features/dns.php" target="_blank">http://www.directnic.com/features/dns.php</a> which is what i use since my ip is
dynamic. once dns points at your server, youre good to go but you cant just
enter your ip at your registrar, you have to use a dns server/service.
since there are multiple exploits for iis, i strongly recommend keeping your
webserver behind a router/NAT firewall and forwarding port 80 to your
server. for a brief description of how to do that, see
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://7slotgrille.com/router" target="_blank">http://7slotgrille.com/router</a> i recommend the linksys befsr41 as it has kept
my website secure despite many malicious attacks/attempts.
if you need any further help, email me at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://tinyurl.com/amfi" target="_blank">http://tinyurl.com/amfi</a> but ill be
offline for at least a week (probably 2) during my move.

Montana, huh? I used to live in Missoula. Pretty country.

I'm not sure I understand this. Are you saying I have to use the dns
services anyway, or if I'm running DNS on the machine to which my IP address
points, it would then be set up to point individual requests to my actual
websites (actually, I have three of them). Thanks again.

Nathan,
good luck with the move - I'll probably be in Great Falls later in the
year - my wife was born there - her sister and brother's family still
live there, so we try to visit once a year!
once again - good luck with the trip and move!

awesome. im headed for great falls. in the middle of packing the uhaul now
(taking a water break) and as soon as im done im outta here. its about 95
degrees and so humid that my clothes are sticking to me, so im not trying to
rush to hard. i hope to be out of here by nightfall, the computer will be
the last to get unplugged/packed away.

ok, you need DNS for 1 or 1 million sites. without DNS, end users will
never find your page by its domain name. since you have a static ip, set up
your web server to also act as a DNS server. enter your own ip for each
website in your host file. then at your registrar where it asks you for
your dns server, put your own ip there as well. once propagation completes
(usually with 24 hours) your sites should function properly.
i really enjoy hosting my own sites. there is no web space restriction, no
content restriction, and no bullshit host rules to worry about. the only
downside to hosting your own sites locally is bandwidth, but thats not an
issue if youre on sdsl or full duplex cable.

You still have to keep to your ISPs terms and conditions. Most[1] of whom
do not allow hosting.

Forget it with cable modems, but quite possibly allowed with DSL.

Hi Andy,
First question (as many have asked in replies)... does your ISP mind
you running a web server from home via this DSL account? Several
folks said they are running websites from their Road Runner accounts,
but I know or a fact that Time Warner does not allow this. I do run a
small webserver at home for my personal use, but I had to do some port
redirection since they've blocked port 80.
At any rate, if you want to go 100% legit and stable, run a colocated
server. This will put you back maybe $50-$100 a month depending on
where you go, but you'll have a very stable connection and folks on
hand to help if network problems to arrise. My Road Runner connection
drops off quite often during the day, and most folks I know that have
cablemodem have the same problem. You mentioned DSL, which is a bit
different then cable, but you need to monitor this before comitting
websites to it.
Cablemodem, DSL, ISDN, and other broadband to your home are for home
use... and the bandwidth and stability isn't there to host more then
one or two sites. If you start hosting sites in this manor, you're
more likely to get a negative reputation and loose customers in the
long run... where a good, thought-out colocated server or even virtual
hosts would make you look great!
Hope this helps,
Keegan.

I'm getting closer!
Well, thanks largely to the excellent advice I've received thus far, I've
signed up with zoneedit, modified my info at network solutions, and now,
when I surf over to my site, it shows as resolving to the IP address of my
local firewall. Now all I have to do is get it to see my site.
I'm running IIS 4.0 for the time being, on a windows 4.0 server machine that
is connected to my hardware firewall. What do I do next? I have tried
getting into IIS administrator and adding a website called
"www.exotic-scales.com", and pointing it to the proper directory. Should
this, in theory do it? I can't tell because IIS will not allow me to start
up the site. It gives me a message about some kind of conflict -- I'm
currently investigating that angle on the MS website. thanks.
