Post subject: Can anyone help with a small but important problem. And alternative browser syst
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Hi all.

A lurker becomes active!

I am in the process of building a website and have encountered a problem in
Opera 7.

Here are the details of Opera I have installed.

Version >> 7.03
Build >> 2670
Platform >> Win32
System >> Windows 2000
Java >> Sun Java Runtime Environment version 1.4

If you take a look at the following page
http://www.netforma.co.uk/tc/default.asp?lang=en you will see that in IE and
Netscape the upper navigation renders as desired, a slight problem with
Netscape, but it is useable at least. If you look at the site in Opera 7,
only the homepage link is visible.

I have gone over this so many times now, and cannot find the problem. I
almost sent my computer on an improvised flying lesson in the garden
yesterday Sad

Can anyone see the problem/s

Also, I have not got a mac or *nix system, so any feedback from any users on
any other issues are welcome.
(I have not completed the site content yet though, so there are problaby
plently of repetitions of content and spelling mistakes or holes in the
content.)

I hope you can help.

Si

Opera 7.23, Win XP, 1024 x 768

All links are visible, but "maintanence " is stretched to fill the cell.
I think it's because you are using a 100% width table, and specifying
specific cell widths in pixels. Opera and Netscape are trying to fill
the entire screen.

Use percentages or pixels, but not both in the same table.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I can't focus on those braces/brackets/whatever - they make my eyes hurt and
if you've been lurking for more than a day you should know not to use tables
for layout and that the strict doctype is recommended for new web documents.

Unless of course you enjoy seeing your page rendered the same in all
browsers
AND
You like to be able to position things exactly where you want them
AND
You want to upset the purists
AND
Brucies links are too overwhelming to wade through
AND
You just cant be bothered to change - just because the few say you should
AND
You just like to use tables because they work - unlike css which is designed
to degrade
AND

Looks OK in my version of Opera (assuming I understand you correctly)
i.e. same as IE6; Opera version is 7.10.

I'm trying not to, keep falling back into old habits.
