Post subject: how to handle in-house credit card processing
Archived from groups: alt>ecommerce (more info?)

i have a client that wants a donate button on their website. they have
a credit card machine at the office, but i am not quite sure how to
handle this situation.

are there any resources for "standards" or what is ok to do for this
type of thing? i will have an ssl, but that's the most that i know to
get. is this type of transaction even allowed or will they be required
to get some type of payment gateway regardless.

any advice or resources that anyone has would be a big help. i have to
make a decision sometime this week on what i can do.

They might consider Paypal. Or even an electronic payment gateway
(link LinkPoint, Verisign's Payflow, Authorizenet.com) with an internet
merchant account.

With them keying in their transactions, the transaction will probably
be downgraded to non-qualified and they will be charged around 2% more
for that transaction. And depending on their contract they might be in
violation of that contract if they exceed the amount of keyed
transactions.

If they plan on doing more than around $1,000 a month, they might
consider an internet merchant account. This will also give them a
virtual terminal to key in transactions as well for about 2.19%.

Emailing the credit card information is not a good idea. You can but
you need to set up encryption keys so that the email is encrypted and
if intercepted by a third party, cannot be read.

Howdy Josh,

Ask your client to visit http://www.gulfvetsurvey.org and click the
"Contributions" button on the bottom right. The page can be set up so
people can specify the amount of the donation.

There are no standards other than what is required to qualify for a Merchant
Card Account. You'll also want the software running behind the site to be
"certified" by Authorize Net the way the BIZyCart Ecommerce Server is.

Visit http://www.authorizenet.com/alliances/carts_cert.php to find the best
solutions for your needs. Those listed have gone through the steps to
ensure card transactions are handled properly. It does not verify the web
site functionality or server security of the shopping cart.
