Post subject: Any good reads on Affiliate Marketing?
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

My buddy is convinced he can make a $million a day in affiliate marketing (maybe
a slight exaggeration on my part)

His enthusiasm piqued my interest and I started checking around. Upon first
look, it appears the only money being made is by people selling books and
courses to teach you how to do affiliate marketing.

He is slightly pragmatic, saying that he wants to set up a hundred sites, fed
off of some software service. He said he expects to make only about $10 or $12
per day from clicks, multiplied times the number of sites he gets up and
running.

Can anyone point me to any books or web sites that offer some truthful insight
into the prospects and process of affiliate marketing?

Thanks!

$10-12/day from clicks? He's dreaming, unless he's Amazon or other high profile
site. He *might* get that much from all 100 sites total. But even that's
doubtable.

To get $10-12/day from a site, you must have people visiting the site. This
means lots of good, applicable content which needs to be updated regularly. One
person can't build and maintain 100 high profile sites!

If he's building the site to make money off of clicks, he'll do better by
flipping burgers at McDonalds.

OTOH, if he's building sites to promote products/services, provide quality
information on a specific topic, run the latest and greatest online RPG, etc.,
clicks can help pay for the hosting. But you won't get rich.

Some of mine are convinced that UFOs land at Stonehenge. I'll keep you
posted if any show up, you be sure to tell us when he's made his
$million.

I can't believe how cynical some of the guys are
in this group at times. Don't get me wrong it isn't
just plain sailing but you can make a lot of money
from affiliate marketing and AdSense if you know what
you are doing and put the time and effort in to it.

Well, I understand the "rum". And I understand the "ufo". But what's the "ar"
for? All For Drunk Flying Saucers?

Seriously - I looked through the site. I saw a lot of general chit-chat. I saw
some people complaining about one thing or the other. But I didn't see anyone
claiming they were making a decent living on their website with nothing else
(i.e. no other product or services).

As you know, you can't get a true idea of a newsgroup
or a forum just by dropping in for an hour. The OP needs
to lurk there for at least a week to get an idea of things.

As for people not claiming to be making a decent living,
I tend to think the people who talk less are the ones who earn
more.

One of the secrets about affiliate marketing is exploiting a niche.
You really think any one with any sense is going to go spouting
off about how well they are doing on a particular keyword or product?

I agree with your part about having other products or services on
the site though, it isn't just a case of throw up a 100 sites and just
sit back and hope for the money to start coming in.
You tend to get out of it what you put in, but the rewards are there
for those who are serious about it, and it is a far easier way to make
a good living than a lot of other jobs.

Actually, I've found just the opposite - not from personal experience, but from
a lot of people who have websites.

A website is a very difficult way to make a living. It works best as a part of
an overall marketing plan. By itself it is almost always a losing proposition.

And a website requires regular maintenance to keep its effectiveness. You can't
just "post and forget'. That requires time and possibly money if you don't have
the necessary skills yourself.

So - how many people do you *personally know* who are making a "good living" -
as defined by at least the average income for that area - from just having a
website? And I'm not talking about people who claim they are doing it on a
discussion board.

Like I have said a couple of times, you get out of it what you
put in. I gave up *proper work* about 18 months ago, and now
do affiliate marketing full time. I probably work as many hours now
than I did when I was working, but can do the hours any time I
like (I tend to do more between 20:00 an midnight than any
other time). I also still see it as a hobby and the more I do the
easier it gets.

None, and the longer it stays that way the better.
Affiliate marketing is still a very young business and as far
as I am concerned the less people doing it the better.
Fortunately, there are a lot of people like the OP's friend,
they will probably set up their hundred sites, earn nothing,
get disulusioned and get out.

Post subject: Any good reads on Affiliate Marketing? Part II Content site building [Login to view extended thread Info.]
Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

I think I let some of the wind out of my friend's sails and he can distinguish
between fact and fiction. I suggested a single content driven site, but he still
thinks many sites are a better road to riches. Smile I think now he will be less
trusting of books and other money makers. Smile

I am now looking for suggestions on building a single site like I suggested to
him.

Which would be better?
A scratch-built site or a customizable template site?

www.Interactivetools.com has a software called Article Manager ($299) that looks
like it does a good job. Supposedly www.askthebuilder.com uses it and brings in
really good money. I know tools won't replace content quality, but I wonder what
road is better in the long run? I looked at the interface and it not difficult
to use, but it looks like it might be cumbersome to get the "look" you want.

Any other tool like the above that are cheaper, or better, or easier, or more
efficient, or ...........>

I like being able to totally customize the site, but the less time spent on HTML
means more time for content and promotion. Yet I don't want a cookie cutter
either.

Please jump in and voice your opinions and thanks for the links on the earlier
thread.
