Today I signed up a new customer - it so happens they have a broken web
site - I understand they had an argument with their web designer and he ran
off with their index file or somesuch. That aside, part of my task is get
the site onto a decent server, so I connect to the given address with ftp
and check out the site files. Seems mostly in good order, but there's a
shed-load of dot files littered around - they have names like .config etc.
anyway to cut it short, these dot files crash my ftp client. what do you
chaps with Windows workstations and *nix servers use to transfer sites
around?

I realise they can be renamed, but that's a chore I could live without -
there's dozens of them.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="ftp://username:password@domain.com" target="_blank">ftp://username:password@domain.com</a> using Internet Explorer and drag the
files/directories to your local folder. Otherwise, I use CuteFTP and have
never had a problem with any file names. Just be careful to figure out
whether they should be ASCII or binary.

I use CuteFTP from Windows XP on the desktop to the Linux server. Never any
problems.

You can configure it to hide or show files. I have it set up to show all
files, which includes about five standard dot files that Ensim/Apache puts
there, e.g .bash_history, .bash_logout

Greetings William,

This is a total stretch.. But, have you updated your virus scan lately?
One of the symptoms of a new WORM that's out there right now, is
problems FTP'ing files... sounds wild, I know.. but, just to be on the
safe side..

For the last few years I use FAR manager built-in FTP client. Never had
problems handling files with dots in names. Even more, in can create such
files in FAR, which is impossible in Windows Explorer.
