IIRC, the reason 13 is back luck is because Biblical reference to 12 is
often a symbol for completeness: 12 tribes of Israel, 12 disciples, etc.
So by adding one more, we ruin this completeness, hence the bad luck.
It's why they sell eggs by the dozen... And presumably why they call 13
donuts, a "baker's dozen" to avoid the 13
