Post subject: font face
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I used "lucida handwriting" on my first website.
Then I also used it on my second website but did not really notice that it
didn't show up (too busy typing)

Today (by coincidence) I managed to take a look at the new site on a
different computer and it looked awful because the lucida font was not right
for the purpose at all.
Why couldn't I see the font on my computer and yet I could see it on the
other computer?????
I did not change a thing.

This evening I opened my 1st website and.......lucida disappeared there
too................

So ...I wanted to download it.....but I discover that Lucida is not a free
font anylonger.........it costs $ 22 to download it.

I still don't understand what happened....If I can see the font, doesn't
that mean that the font is installed on my computer? or do they have a way
so that they can block it.........

I am still baffled.......

What will happen if I don't change the font face to something different?
The way I see it on my computer, it is just fine. But what will others see
who can't see the lucida font either?

Anyway...my 2nd site looks better now (I think and hope...)

But anyone who can shed some light on what happened?

TIA

Nolly

think I found it.........I used to work with Windows 98...

A few months ago I changed to Windows 2000......
and the font is not part of that package.......it seems.........

The other computer that I used today..had the 98 version....

still why didn't I notice it before...........

But in that case, I think I should change the font to something that is more
widely used, right?

Nolly, who is not looking forward to the work.............

body {font-family:.....;}

I make that exactly 3.5 seconds including file-->save. you can probably
stretch it to 15 minutes if you include ftp/upload and coffee. Might as
well round it up to the nearest hour for invoicing ;o)

I was talking about my sites, and using it as an anecdotal side-swipe at the
CSS nay-sayers and luddites ;o)

Well you could have a a dynamically generated site such as mine, which
currently has around 100 pages but only two main files (1 PHP, 1 CSS).
Certainly saves me time when doing menial things like changing the style
or changing the copyright dates.

Do you plan to offer your site visitors to pay $22 for that font
downloading, so they would be able to view you site as you intended?

I discovered what caused it (see other posting)
(In time...) I will change the font face so that more people can view it the
way it was supposed to look.

Those with Windows 98 will probably see it, I just have to find 1 or 2 nice
repacements to add to lucida for the people with Windows 2000 and above.

And your visitors may use Win95 or WinXP also, and some freaks use such
mysterious things like Linux, FreeBSD and others. Lots of different
computers out there.

Almost right. Don't use font-face in your HTML at all. Specify font-family
in your CSS file.

After all, text is text, it's intended to be read, not admired. If you want
something beautiful, do it in graphics.

The website is a personal site.
The titel or head of the pages are/were lucida handwriting.
For the text on the pages I use Arial so it should be easy to read.....

My new site is used for my profession, so I only use Arial because it should
professional and not playful.

The purpose of the site determines what it looks like.

kind regards
