hi y'all
anyone read the recent 'discussion' about Flash v HTML in the .Net magazine.
Flash won out (rightly, I think), but what do others think?

I missed that article, but both have their places.
Flash is great for animations, games and the like.
HTML is great for conveying information.
Flash isn't very good for converying information, its much harder to parse,
doesn't degrade gracefully, is far less searchable, doesn't work too well
on mobile devices, isn't printer friendly, etc.

Kinda reminds me of this little tidbit I found on "Computer Stupidities":
A user once wrote in to demand that we (an ISP) switch servers from a
SparcStation costing as much as a small house to a "superior" $5000 Win 95
machine, or he and all his friends would quit. His letter closed with the
line, "Don't fight me on this. I never lose." He lost.

Flash is good for coding applications and vector illustrations.
HTML is good for everything else.
Flash is primarily used by people that can't do proper HTML.
Flash can be used well, but like anything, it's often not.
BTW, ".Net" is a trademark of Microsoft for their latest internet-enabled
software suite.

above is bs. Flash has Actionscript, which is far more complex than HTML.
ifcourse you dont even need to know HTML to make a web site, just use
frontpage.
actionscript resembles javascipt, C++, and Java, not HTML which is just tags
which a 5 year old can learn.
all technologies can be misused, as well as Java applets, which are gone from
the
net replaced by Flash games.

..net magazine has been around much longer than Microsoft's trademark.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.netmag.co.uk/" target="_blank">http://www.netmag.co.uk/</a>
I also don't think Microsoft could register that as a trademark, considering
that the ".net" term has been around at least as long as global domain
registrations.

Hi Mak, good to hear from you.
No history here, I couldn't be bothered writing a lot about it. Think
accessability, and I ain't talking about disabled people here!

After reading the article earlier this month I reconsidered my
subscription to .NET. Comparing Flash and HTML being used for the same
purpose is like comparing apples and oranges.

thank you Charles for that 'constructive' comment...

Slight qualification here Heidi.
I think Flash is great, if used correctly.
In the context of the subject line, if it's an "either or" question, then
HTML naturally wins.
