Post subject: IIS failed to start - World Wide Web Publishing Service the problem?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

IIS running on Win XP for local development of .asp pages.
Out of the blue, IIS seems to stop working, pages no
longer published. Inetinfo.exe says it's running in task
manager, but in Services, World Wide Web Publishing seems
incabable of starting (it's stuck on 'Starting'). In the
Event Viewer, I'm getting the following error.
"The World Wide Web Publishing service failed to start due
to the following error:
The account specified for this service is different from
the account specified for other services running in the
same process."
But following the suggested fixes have no result.

If I manually stop WWWPS and then start IIS, I get the
service up and running, but as soon as I attempt to start
the Default Web Site, it hangs and then 'Service did not
respond in a timely manner', or a 'The RPC Server is not
available'.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled IIS several times, the
uninstall goes fine, but the reinstall get's all the way
through, and then when it seems to be done, up pops
the 'Windows XP setup' titled pop up, with 'Please wait',
and proceeds to hang until I reboot. I think this might
give a little insight into what's wrong with the machine,
but I have no idea how.

When IIS is started through Administrative Tools, and then
Windows is rebooted, I get request to save the .msc file
before the system can quit. Does this indicate anything?

The DotNet Framework is installed, but has been for
several weeks, and IIS has worked fine.

Any ideas anyone? This is a killer and it's cost me a day
already. Would reinstall Windows, but it's a laptop
recovery disk, meaning a 'reformat to shipping state',
which I'm loathe to do.

What is the Event ID, Source, and Description in the Event Viewer?
What changes were made to the system before it stopped working?

Check:
The identity of the IIS COM+ Applications:
Right-click on the application and select properties. Go to the Identity
Tab.

Logon account for the service:
Go to services | double click on world wide web publishing service | click
on log on tab

Log on as: (take note as what account) by default , you should select
Local system account)

Go to services | double click on world wide web publishing service | click
on log on tab

Log on as (Make sure that you are using the same account as what you have
configured for the www publishing service
