If I need to transfer a domain from one registar to another does it
usally just cost me money on the one that I'm transferring to or from
both?

I'm trying to transfer from one and I can't get an authorization code
from them.

I don't know of any receiving registrars that charge you for the privilege
of giving them your business. Quite the contrary, most will offer special
deals to entice you to switch to them.

Losing registrars on the other hand are a different matter. Most in my
experience do not charge you to move the name away, but there are some
robbing bastards out there like Easyspace who charge a whopping £50 (UK) to
move.

I can't get the current one domainsite to give me a code to transfer
it. My registar is asking for it. How long does it usually take for
the code?

IME just the gaining registrar and that cost will be reflected in an extra
years registration - you don't really end up paying extra, just a little
earlier.

..org or one of the also-ran TLDs?

EPP Auth Code is not needed for .com/.net domains

if it was one of our domains and you needed an authorisation code it'd take
me about 15 seconds to generate.

just moments. however it is my experience that you have to ask the right
question in the right place.

Have you checked the web interface at domainsite? maybe there's a request
form there? Alternatively, call them and ask them how to request the code.

I will second this... most domain control panels have a place to
generate and/or send you the code. Often however, it is on some
obscure page or you have to get there through a series of bizarre
steps, SRS was great at this one.

I own a few domains and have lost a couple in the distant past to those
robbing bastards who in the fine print charge money to transfer domains
out, I have also lost some when trying to transfer out in the last 2
weeks, only to find it failed, went south and the registrars wanted big
bucks to bring them back. In many cases it is illegal, and in more
cases it is imoral.

When you transfer a domain, you pay the new registrar the next years
fees and cannot transfer a domain within 60 days of purchase or
transfer in most cases.

You also sound a little new, if you are having a hard time, you might
ask someone that does this stuff more often - someone you trust.
