Customize as in custom functions and features?
It is usually your knowledge of php that allows you to more easily
customize open source code.
Do you mean which one has the fullest feature set? Which is more
flexible?
Probably OSCommerce. Zencart is a fork of and is based on OSCommerce.
Be prepared to spend time researching and learning.
Best to define what you need to accomplish, then look for a solution.

X-Cart is a Russian rip-off of OS Commerce. OSC has the most support
by far

Mike the biggest thing you need to watch out for is a huge number of
the PHP shopping cart or e-commerce packages are very vulnerable to
code injection, allowing hackers to exploit your site and even extract
your customer database through MySQL Injections. before choosing I
would google a few of the brands you are considering, using the brand
name and the word exploit - If you get hits you will know which
versions are vulnerable.
have fun!

I have a very similar question. I have been trying some f/oss ecomm
solutions, and I have not been impressed.
First I tried drupal's ecomm module. I tried drupal because I know some
drupal, and I thought it might be easier to use something I knew. So
far, I can not get it to work at all.
I also tried TinyERP's ecomm solution. Again, I could not get it to
work at all.
I suppose OSCommerce and ZenCart are the two heavyweights.
Which is easiest for a beginner? >> Stay informed about: Which e-commerce software is best among osCommerce, Zen-Ca.. |

In general, what does it take to 'clean' the post variables,
so this is not a possibility or a concern?
1)
What about php's addslashes? Is that all it takes to
sanitize $_POST values?
.......addslashes($_POST['what_ever']);
2)
phpclasses.org has some "post variable filtering classes"
that allow only a defined subset of code-like constructs to
pass through. Is that sort of thing what it takes to
make POST vars safe?
How does one look at public domain form processing
code, that interacts with Mysql, and determine whether
it is safe or not? >> Stay informed about: Which e-commerce software is best among osCommerce, Zen-Ca.. |

In terms of using the store when it's up and running, they are both very
straight forward. We have a couple of clients who have seriously never
used computers before but have purchased them solely to start trading
online - they've had no problems getting to grips with osCommerce.
In terms of installing the store, I know more about osCommerce than I do
Zencart (although I'd imagine it's very similar). osCommerce is quite
easy to set up and install if all you want is the standard "look". It
gets a bit more complicated if you want to customize the appearance of
the site or add extra features, but it's certainly not impossible for
the enthusiastic diy-er
The other alternative is to pay someone to set up and customise your
store for you. Several people (ourselves included) offer this service
and it's often better just to save on the hassle and get everything up
and running quickly and exactly as you want it.
Hope that helps,
Ali
