I am new to ecommerce, and have recently set up a web site featuring a
software product I developed. The web site has been on-line for about
2 months now, and gets very little traffic. The Google search engine
still does not find it, however, it can be found on less popular search
engines like excite.com. I have listed the site at dmoz.com, the 'what
you seek' network, and got a link posted on a related website. I also
have a Google Adwords account (currently paused), which was bringing in
some clicks, but no revenue. I am wandering if anyone has some advise
on how to get things moving a little quicker???
Thanks,
Randy Kostiuk

Hi Randy,
Do you get logs/stats with your site hosting?
If you get nice graphical stats, use that information to find where people
are going.
If you only get raw logs, use AWStats (http://awstats.sourceforge.net/) to
get something pretty - Email me if you need help on running under Windows,
as most tutorials cover Linux. If you get no logs or stats, perhaps
consider some 3rd party stats service.
- are they just hitting the front page and leaving?
The link leading them there may have been mis-leading, or they didn't
realise it was a commerical product.
- are they looking around, then leaving?
Perhaps it doesn't do what they want, or you do not "sell" the product well
enough?
- Are you getting downloads of the trial version?
If so, this is a good sign - people are interested, but may not want to pay
for the full version or it doesn't meet their requirements.
My impressions of your site are that it looks very corporate - yet your
product would be selling to the public, and a specific area of the public.
Also, drop the "products" section until you have more products to sell.
I suggest creating a 2nd site to promote the software, with more "wow"
factor.
Know your competion - a quick google brought up;
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.dietpower.com/" target="_blank">http://www.dietpower.com/</a>
I didn't dig very deep, and find the site a bit too garish - but the main
points of their product is listed on the front page, it is very clear what
the product is about. Their page will be full of keywords, which search
engines will use.
Keep your "corporate" site for your company, but unless you're selling to
buisness/geeks, create a more dumbed down site, taylored to the software.
Best wishes,

Howdy Randy,
You've done a good job on validation and adding candy graphics like many web
sites do. People seem to think sites that have the "corporate" look are
what you are supposed to do.
However, fancy meaningless pictures that cover most of the screen, blurry
links, poor text contrast, and very tiny text does not get order buttons
clicked.
The web crawlers, just like people browsing, tend to ignore text you don't
want people to read for one reason or another. That's the impression you
create with tiny text.
That lack of confidence continues to show up when folks click for details.
The <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.rankosoftware.com/screenshot1.html" target="_blank">http://www.rankosoftware.com/screenshot1.html</a> does not tell me a thing
about what your program does and is not indexable by the search engines.
Start over again with your computer screen set for 800 wide for the screen
shots. Then shrink them to 700 wide. (If your program won't work at 800,
you don't have a product.)
Make sure the screen shots show something important and have text included
that describes what's going on. If you are truly proud of your program,
that has to be obvious on the web site.
BTW, add <META HTTP-EQUIV="imagetoolbar" CONTENT="NO"> to all your web pages
so the stupid IExplorer tool bar doesn't jump on top of your graphics.

Hi Jason,
Yes, I do get web stats with my web hosting package. Most people are
leaving after visiting the first page ( and not returning). There has
been a number of downloads on the free trial, just no purchases. The
free trial is good for 30 days, so I might be a little impatient. I
think you're right, I need to focus the web site more on my target
market place ( body builders, dieters, etc., not the geeks.)
Thanks for the feedback..

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the feedback. Yup, the program works at 800. I will
revise my product description / info has you have suggested. I know
my own product well, but I forget that people seeing it for the first
time know nothing about it...
