I'm looking for some assistance on building the backend of an
ecommerce web site. Does anyone know where I can find information on
integrating a shopping cart, credit card transaction and database
functions into a website? I've found nothing in reference books on
how to go about this. I'd appreciate some assistance in directing me
to a source of good information. Thanks!!

You should check with your ISP if you currently have a hosting
company, if not you should research ISP's and what they offer for
e-commerce solutions. I work for an ISP and that is my responsability,
to inform individuals of the solutions available. Any ISP worth
anything will have competitive offerings regarding e-commerce and will
be able to assist you in getting started. Hope that helps you, Good
Luck.

I set my own up in PHP and I think <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.oscommerce.org" target="_blank">www.oscommerce.org</a> will allow you to
simply plug-in the information. The group providing the merchant account
should provide you with everything....mine did.

I uses Wells Fargo. 2.39%(for keyed entries) discount rate and a bunch of
other good stuff.
