Post subject: New Web Site Directory - Link Exchange.
Archived from groups: alt>ecommerce (more info?)

Hello Everyone,

Think you'll like this idea.

After building a few sites, and waiting, I still am not really listed
on most search engines in the beginning. Search engines seem to be
dominated by the BIG Commercial Sites, not us little-guys. So, I
noticed once I got a few more sites pointing back to my sites, my
sites started popping up on the Search engines. So, forgive me for
being ignorant, I decided to read up on search engine position, and
found out about 'link popularity'.

Now being a little better armed, I used up a some extra space I have
with one account and came up with my own Web Site Directory/Link
Exchange Site, http://www.LinkSkyRise.com . I want to open this site
up to the public, and help others get better positions on search
engines. The service is free, only have to have a real site(see
terms and conditions for more details) and you need to add a
reciprocal link back to www.LinkSkyRise.com . I think it's helping
me, with my commercial sites and can help you.

So, have fun, and let's see if we can all work together.

Sincerely,

Tom

A few notes:
It looks really bad under netscape. I didn't check Opera.

Consider adding more sub categories. Check out other directory listings to
see how they orginize and see how they do things. Look at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://dmoz.org/" target="_blank">http://dmoz.org/</a>
for an example.

Layout your listings in a more pleasing fashion. All the big search
engines have a similar layout (yahoo, google, dmoz) for a reason. People
that are searching want simple, well orginized, and quick sites.

Create a logo. Having a logo will give people that link to you something
to use.

Don't become a FFA site.

Cheers

Tested with Mozilla 1.5, what version of netscape are you using?
Might need better test browsers.

Yes, you are clearly pointing the flaws that I've seen too, and due to
little time put into it, I've conforted myself saying it will grow
with time.

Great Idea! I guess that's why a lot of other places use it. Feeling
like the proverbal mule getting beat with a 2x4.

Please help me here, I thought I was different from a FFA site. I
don't just give a listing so I can capture emails and sell them. This
is a community effort, I don't spam, or sell your email, and you must
link back to us.

Can you offer more specifics how NOT to become a FFA site?

No, Cheers to you, and thanks for your time and advice.

I tried it with NS 4.79 with javascript turned off. If I go to any of the other
big search engines, having javascript turned on or off makes no difference in
how the site looks. Portal sites should not depend on JS for look and feel.

That's a resonable assumption but what would cause you to add another category?
Shouldn't you have a "suggest a category" type link? If users can't find a
category they want to use, they may not bother adding their site. Worse, they
may not tell you they didn't add their site or why.

You pretty much covered it. Make sure you write a privacy policy so your
visitors will know what you do with the information you collect from them.

Damn, using a newer version of Mozilla, maybe that's why I didn't
catch the problem.

Good idea. I orginally thought put it in the add link form, (If you
don't see your category suggest one), then I thought maybe they should
just select other and I would come up with the new categories. I'm
thinking now, from your feedback, I should at a minium explain what
I'm doing so the user is clear about my intentions. Thanks for this
suggestion though.

Got one already, and it's explains our policy pretty clearly, we do
not share your email with others.

Guessing I should be pretty much more obvious with that information
too.

BTW, thanks for the honest feedback and expression your observations
about features other Site Directories have.
