Hi,

I really wanted to get the creobox.com domain, but it seems it's
already taken. However, when I try to go on the site, it says that it
can't find the server at creobox.com and it's been like that for
months.

Here is the whois info:

Expiry Date: 03-Mar-2008
Days Left for Expiry: 26
Record Creation Date: 03-Mar-2006
Domain Status: Active

Domain servers in listed order:

I wanted to get an opinion of how would it be possible to get this
unused but registered domain? Should I contact the owner? The contact
info for the owner seems fake or something, I'm not sure. Should I
wait until the expiry date on March 3rd?

Thanks in advance

You've got a couple of options.

You can 'backorder' the domain through a registrar (Go Daddy
does this) by paying a fee to backorder it *if* no one else has
already backordered it. Once it is sixty days past the expiration
date (and if the current owner does not renew it), you would become
the domain owner.

You can just let it die a natural death and then register it
sixty days after it expires.

You can contact the domain owner and make him an offer for it.
However, I'd be leary about sending money to someone for a domain
especially someone outside of the country. They could keep your money
and the domain, too. And you'd have little recourse.

There is a service called Snapnames that you could investigate
(http://www.snapnames.com). You can make an offer for the domain
through Snapnames and they can relay your offer to the domain owner
and *see* if they could acquire it for you. I am not sure what they
are currently charging for their services (although they did get two
domain names for me quite some years back. If I remember right, the
fee was seventy-five dollars each at that time).

There may be some other options.

Good luck. Let me know how it turns out.

Regards,

Fred

You don't know for sure if it's unused. Domains are not for HTTP only.
Just because there's no web server responding on port 80 doesn't mean
that the domain might not be in use for other non-HTTP services like
email, FTP or whatever.

Try to contact the owner or the admin.

That's true. But I'd recommend that you not contact the owner
at this point. Just see if he fails to renew it. If he doen't renew,
just wait the sixty day grace period and then register it. I've
snatched more than one domain like that.

If you email, you may remind him to renew it.

If he does renew it, then contact him and see what you can
negotiate.

I think it's too risky to let it expire.. there are outfits that have
very fast servers that snap up all expiring domains faster than any
human could..

Besides snapnames.com there are others, but I've tried that and it
doesn't work all the time either.

I *would* recommend to contact the owner of the domain and offer to
buy it. You can use an escrow service to make sure you don't get
screwed.

You probably have more experience with it than me..

Pool.com is another service, if you really want it and decide against
contacting the owner, using two or more services like this might be
advisable..

I was trying to get one that my ISP let lapse (after a series of
acquisitions) and was using both snapnames and pool, but lost it to
some Korean firm. I really wanted it as I was using it for my e-mail!
so I regreted not trying to buy it from my ISP directly. So that's
where I was coming from.. if you could live without the domain and
take a chance of not getting it then you could try snapnames and pool
like I did.

I've gotten some good names by just letting it expire. Domain
names aren't as big a premium as they were prior to the dot com bust.
The escrow service sounds [at least in theory] like a good
idea. But I don't have any experience with them to be able to
recommend them.

Beyond that, a service like SnapNames would be a good way to
go.

Fred

Interesting trick. I'm curious how many are snapped quickly up after
being released.

I know one fear is that netsol's new "temporary registration" activity
clues in the domain squatters / portfolio builders, whatever you want
to call them, that there is interest in a domain, thus they would snap
it up... I believe in fact that is the primary criticism?

I'm curious if there has been a study on this yet.. i.e. how many are
in fact snapped up within a week of having been released from netsol's
temporary registration.. anyone know?

Chances are notsol's "temporary registration" will be no more soon - if
it hasn't gone away already.
