WWW Service not restarting

I can't restart my WWW services, on two separate systems. "Error 1747: The authentication service is unknown" and no, it's not addresses in the two KB articles that relate to that error code. Let me elaborate:

I am the only person with access to my servers. Security patches were up-to-date as of about a month ago (don't give me any grief about this being too long) however, I was out of town for four days and while gone one server started requiring authentication to access my publicly accessible sites.

After rebooting it worked mostly fine--though the FTP running would not accept my authentication (Terminal services let me login just fine). I then loaded the latest MS updates and now IIS Web services will not start at all. Nor will some applications run. Then, I started having the same problem with a second system on the same network. Loaded latest MS Updates and ASP.NET and now it, too, will not run IIS Web services.

I've tried the following:
- Removing IIS and reloading: no change
- Loading an older IIS config: no change
- running anti-virus: McAfee won't run anymore, loaded a couple others without any results
- loaded "Microsoft Loop-back adapter" per the KB articles related to the ERROR 1747 I'm getting: no change

Suggestions?

Looks like kerberos is not available? Or did Active directory for some
reason demote?
I've had that once.

There are tools for LDAP that (ldp) that make analyzes of your domain
controler and help to fix it. NTDSUtil.exe is the tool you might try
(Support Tools Directory from the resource kit)...

or something obscure like the TCP/IP config is incorrect so your member
server, cannot find a valid domain controler using the (active) DNS?
