Does your server reject email from .com and .net that don't exist? Not any
more it doesn't. Thanks to Verislime now making all domains resolve in an
apparent effort to hijack the MSN or whatever your default search is for "no
DNS" results. Now every .net resolves to 64.94.110.11 and by tomorrow I
believe every .com will as well.
Yes, I've tested it, not-a-real.net or make up your own.

Won't this just be a case of: Now we'll reject mail with DNS that resolves
to 64.94.110.11 ? A failed DNS search takes a lot longer than one which
resolves right away. Won't this make scanning for non-existing domains
even faster?

The mail doesn't come from that IP.

Not that it matters, but in an IRC chat and it's now on Slashdot and being
discussed in news.admin.net-abuse.email.

I'm sure it will be on news.com.com soon enough.

yep unresolved .com domains now bring up the veri-thing page. I was happy
with trial and error domain name searching on product/company/"things I
heard down the pub" names. I don't like the way it screws with the address
line in my browser.
they also try to send 3rd party cookies from the page in a poor attempt to
collect marketing data.
Note to data collection agencies: you are welcome to track my net usage (in
all browsers/UAs/connections) and demographic profile - however that
information will cost you. subscription deals can be arranged.

Big deal. So the spammmer gets a ten-a-penny domain name under the previous
system, or fakes one.

Wow! Thank you Verisign!!!
I deliberately mistyped one of my domains, and got the verisign page.
It suggested the CORRECT domain!!!
Think of all those new visitors that previously I would have lost!
I love it!!

may be a short relationship - it depends on the nature of the typo as well
as how popular that alt spelling is and how 'good' the algo is.
some typos bring up the site I wanted, others don't even show it in the
list.

Can anyone explain why Verisign can do this and how in really dumb
language for me?
I'm getting the effect here for both .com and .net. but not .com.au and
I don't like it (as much as the 404 page bores me).<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Verisign Screws The World |

Because they can get away with it. So far.

Verisign doesn't control .com.au.

Wake up McWebber and smell the coffee!
Verisign for all their evil do not control the dns.
It is simply a wildcard in the dns at the level they do have control over
Its not a new thing. Marketers have been doing that for years only
difference is they did not effect the same level of dns. Rather they only
effected a name search at the level and below where they were positioned on
the hierarchy.
whether you get a 404 or the Verisign page you still know that the name does
not exist
As far as your mail is concerned, reject of non existance domains will still
apply as they are a dns lookup function and that is not effected! Yes the
IP# will be there but the zone file is empty and there are no mx records to
respond!
If you don't like what Verisign are doing, (which does not impinge on the
functioning of the net), I sugest you are on the wrong network
I have just run a series of very thourough tests on names I know are not
registered and every time I still get a page cannot be displayed - I do not
get taken to that page you refer to unless I input the IP#!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Verisign Screws The World |

Yes, they control the root servers.

Yes it is. The domain appears to exist because Verislime has an A record for
every domain. The default action by RFC is when there is no MX to try the A
record, so now every domain appears to be valid.

Per the RFC the A record responds because they have an MTA running.
