Post subject: VD icon disappears from IIS Manager after creating subweb
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Situation:
IIS 6 (Windows Server 2003)
ASP.NET v1.1.4322 and FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 allowed

Sometimes, after creating a virtual directory, and then configuring
FrontPage Server Extensions on it (unique permissions - the directory
owner becomes the administrator), the virtual directory icon
disappears from the IIS Manager. The subweb can still be administered
using the new browser-based pages, but IIS Manager is still needed for
some tasks, like assigning the virtual directory / application to an
application pool, or checking/unchecking the directory browsing
checkbox.

I have noticed that it seems to happen mostly when another subweb is
created below the virtual directory / application / subweb described
above.

Is anyone else running into this? Is it fixable? Have we
misconfigured something?

I am experiencing the exact problems you described.

I create a subweb and everything works fine until I add a virtual directory
under that subweb. Then it just disappears from IIS manager

The subweb still exists, works fine, I just can't administer it.

This is extremely frustrating.

Anyone found a solution!!

Try here for best practices:

microsoft.public.frontpage.extensions.windowsnt

Sounds like you are nesting webs, which is not a good practice (web inside a web).

Thank you. I hope this information is helpful.

Hi:

Thanks for your answer, but...

This does not happen in IIS 5 / Windows 2000 / FPSE=20
2000. Also, ASP.NET development supports nested web=20
applications, which translate back to nested webs when we=20
look at the IIS configuration. Further, if a customer=20
has web administration control of a subweb, and we want=20
them to manage their area without our IT involvement, how=20
else can they have the flexibility to create the=20
environment they want?

As I wrote before, it seems to happen mostly when another=20
subweb is created below an existing subweb, but not=20
always. So, I don't think the nested subweb issue is the=20
answer all the time.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

If this is XP, then I believe there is a bug filed for that, and it will be included in sp2 for XP.

Thank you. I hope this information is helpful.

Post subject: Re: VD icon disappears from IIS Manager after creating subweb [Login to view extended thread Info.]

I am running the web application on Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition volume
license (MSDN Disc 2089 May 2003) with IIS 6.

Everything worked fine on XPsp1 and Windows 2k pro and server

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have had to hold back on a role out
of windows 2003 on our servers because of this.

Here is a message I posted elsewhere, not sure if it's a FrontPage 2002
problem or IIS6

-----------------
I am running IIS 6 on a windows 2003 enterprise server.

After creating a Subweb, if I add a virtual directory under this Subweb, the
Subweb disappears from the IIS Manager. The Subweb still exists as I can
browse the site, but am unable to administer it through IIS.

Here is exactly what I have done.

Open IIS Manager and created a new Web Site under Web Sites

Right clicked on the new Web Site and clicked Configure Server Extensions
2002

Under this new Web Site I have created a new Virtual Directory

Right click the new Virtual Directory and click Configure Server Extensions
2002. This is now a Subweb. I am able to publish to this site from VS.NET
and browse the site in IE.
Ie www.server.com/MySubWeb/

Under this Subweb I add a new Virtual Directory.
Ie www.server.com/MySubWeb/NewVirtualDirectory/

This is where I run into problems

If I close IIS Manager and reopen it, the Subweb with the server extensions
is not listed under the Web Site in IIS Manager.

The Subweb and the Virtual Directory under the Subweb exist and are working
fine, I just can't see them in IIS Manger.

My first thought was some permissions problems, but I have been unable to
get anywhere.

This site has been setup and running with exactly the same configuration on
a Windows 2000 server for 18+ months without a problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Some more information…..

I have narrowed it down to VS.NET 2003 copy project.

As soon as I do a copy project using FrontPage extensions the Subweb
disappears.

You may want to see if this is a known bug, and if so, if a fix is available. If so, you will probably have to call in to get the fix, but you
won't be charged. I bet that the "copy project" command is handled by FPSE, and I would start there. If you mention that you are
holding off rolling out a product because of this, it makes it a little more "urgent" on our side, but they would want to track this by a
case.

Thank you. I hope this information is helpful.
