Can anyone point me to references on how PDAs and WAP Enabled phones
identify themselves?

not sure, but ...

<LINK rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="handheld" href="hh.css">

would seem a more useful activity.

I don't know specifically, but I do know that Opera is big in this area.
They have really focused their resources here; I guess its because they
sniff an opportunity at something MS doesn't totally control.

So I would suggest that those products would primarily identify
themselves as Opera - the proprietory software of other manufacturers
would do the same. I don't know if Opera would identify itself
differently to the PC version; other manufacturers would be easier to
identify (presuming their browser name is unique to PDA/WAP devices)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I have user agent strings purporting to be "Nokia" phones accessing
the site. They may be faked, or they may be real.

I can dig out the full details from the logs if anyone's really
interested.
