Open question(s) to all:
What are your thoughts on sitemaps?
What makes a good sitemap?
What makes a bad sitemap?
How should a sitemap be laid out?

Sitemaps are a good thing...

Not only do they help the user find their way around your system, but they
help search engine spiders find their way too

How you do the sitemap I think is very dependant on your site, its size and
its content.

I think the big thing is the sitemap should be usable... if your site has
little content then you can pretty much detail every page in it and thats
still usable. However I've seen a sitemap (somebody posted one earlier
this month IIRC) where this guy was selling about 600 items and each one of
them appeared on his sitemap... Although it was organized by category, I
think it was unusable overall (though I am sure the search engine bots
enjoyed it)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Very very useful. All large sites should have them, and most smaller ones.

 > What makes a good sitemap?

Must show all pages (of course), their relative hierarchies and main
interactions. It should be obvious which page is the home page and which
pages are the important pages and which the less important.

Each page must be a link to that page.

Just having a list of all the pages on the site.

There is no one way - you could use a breadcrumb trail type menu,
perhaps expandable (like in windows explorer). My preference is to have
an image map which graphical lays out the hierarchy sort of like a
pyramid. However, this gets difficult to lay out when you have lots of
pages and/or sections.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Just too bad there aren't any decent site map generators taht are free and
do recursive directories and allow you to filter what files to include in
the site map.
