I'm putting together a revised SEO strategy, but I've hit a wall of
confusion.....I can't figure out what the difference is between the
<acronym> tag and the <abbr> tag.....As far as I can see, they do exactly
the same thing......Am I missing something?....

Be prepared for a lengthy debate over the difference between what makes an
acronym and what makes an abbreviation...
Basically, one marks an acronym and one marks an abbreviation.

Oh, and for what it's worth, I don't anticipate that either element will
help towards SEO

Hmmmm...Everything I've read has suggested that they'll help.....I guess it
can't hurt to include them anyway, just in case.....

As I see it, the two are almost interchangeable....Perhaps <abbr> is a bit
more universal that <acronym> as an acronym is just a specific kind of
abbreviation.....So to my mind the term 'abbreviation' is a larger more
general term for things like Initials pnemonics and acronyms.....

Hmmm.....I've just noticed that in IE6, the acronym tag shows up the text in
the same way as the alt text on an image, but the abbr tag doesn't.....

It is once someone tosses "initialism" into the mix, too. Smile

this pops up all the time, its a seemingly endless debate.

<acronym>
"A word formed from the initial letters of a name, such as WAC for
Women's Army Corps, or by combining initial letters or parts of a series
of words, such as radar for radio detecting and ranging."
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=acronym" target="_blank">http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=acronym</a>

<abbr>
"A shortened form of a word or phrase used chiefly in writing to
represent the complete form, such as Mass. for Massachusetts or USMC for
United States Marine Corps."
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=abbreviation" target="_blank">http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=abbreviation</a>

Would you agree that in areas of doubt, where it's difficult to be sure
which is which, the safest thing to do is just use the <abbr> tag?
