Simple problem - I have two domains at the moment:
domain.org and ns.domain.org
The problem is that on the server it runs on (Win 2003 64bit R2 standard) -
if I open a browser on it and type in ns.domain.org it gives me a 404,
whereas on any other computer on the Network or internet it is found just
fine. The domain.org domain IS seen correctly, even though that too is a
seperate website (and not Default Web Site)
The server runs DNS server but is not a DNS for the rest of my network,
which uses the modem/router instead (the server is a bit of a test case, it
also a domain controller and Exchange machine but not really used as such
yet)
Many thanks for help

Are you sure you have verified name resolution? That one the two machines
the DNS names resolve to the correct IP addresses?
Cheers

Hello,
I am not entirely sure if I know what you mean - Im quite new to hosting my
own domain at home. DNS is configured correctly for Active Directory so it
has forward and reverse lookup zones, accepts dynamic updates from the DNS
server from my ISP. However the way my ISP has configured my domain is that
I can make ANY sub-domain here myself, they just forward it here. So now I
tried "ns.domain.org" but I could also make any random one up, it would all
point to the same machine.
Now I am guessing you mean I have to enter these somehow in the DNS for them
to be found?
Coz I have entered ns.domain.org in the header field in IIS 6 config, and so
from other machines (which use the dialin modem/ISP as DNS) it works OK,
just not on the machine itself (which uses itself as DNS, albeit with
updates from same ISP), which is kinda strange... Internet works fine on the
server, this is the ONLY thing it wont find (the subdomain)
Thank you,
W

On your server, please do:
ping ns.domain.org
and tell us what IP address this resolves to, and whether this is the
correct IP address where your website is listening on.
Cheers

From my Vista machine:
Pinging ns.irresistance.org [60.240.33.172] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 60.240.33.172: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=255
Ping statistics for 60.240.33.172:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms
From the server:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ping ns.irresistance.org
Ping request could not find host ns.irresistance.org. Please check the name
and
try again.
Mind you, I also run IIS7 on the Vista machine and switched to IT as the
internet-visible server - and STILL trying to browse to ns.irresistance.org
from the server does not work. So it seems to be irrelevant to which machine
it points - it just wont find it
The above result is IDENTICAL regardless of which server is setup on the
router as the internet-visible server (one is 192.168.0.2, the other .3)
Thanks

From what you have posted you essentially have a name resolution problem
The server is not able to resolve ns.irresistance.org using whatever DNS
configuration you currently have.
This is a DNS issue, not an IIS issue. IIS is working just fine.
So, on your DNS server on your server:
a) have you made yourself authorative for the "irresistance.org " domain? if
so, you need to add your own A record for ns.irresistance.org and point it
to the appropriate IP address
b) if you have not made yourself authoritative, then either you need to
ensure that the server is using Root Hints, or configuring conditional
forwarding for the irresistance.org domain to a DNS server (e.g. your ISP's)
that can resolve hostnames in that domain for you.
Cheers

Hi Ken
Thanks for your reply... err.. hmm.
All I know is that my ISP simply redirects all requests to
*.irresistance.org to my IP here at home (static)
I've had a small play with DNS setup on the machine but would rather not
muck around with it too much as I had some issues initially setting up AD.
Any idea where, assuming I am authorative for the domain, I can
add/configure the proper entry so it is found on the server itself?
Thanks again
W

Open the DNS Manager MMC snapin in your Administrative tools folder.
See if there is a Forward Lookup zone for "irresistance.org".
- If so, add the appropriate A record
- If not, then ensure that the DNS server does not think that it's
authoratative for "." (all domains)
Cheers
