I've got some reasonably succesful hobby-type sites running so I'm
reasonably good at that.

My next project is to put a shopping basket up. I'm not sure how to do
this. Basically the plan is:

put up thumbnails of photos
User selects the required thumbnails and puts them into a shopping
basket
Then the user pays (preferably via paypal)
Then they get the full-sized photos.

I'd like to automate all this rather than spend time emailing customers
with their purchased photos.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to charge potential customers a block fee
for which they can have up to X photos with the fee paid being valid
for a month before it expires. So that:

customer pays $X
Customer selects Z photos at $y apiece
Their account goes down by $ZY
They can replenish the X when needed.

This reduces paypal fees.

Any suggestions/ideas/books to read?

I get confused really easy these days - some might say it's an age thing
(but they usually only say it once). Please don't post upside down - it
really doesn't make any sense.

Now then - some thoughts.

#1 There's a chap posts here (from time to time) that has a photo site
(pics of his travels in Malaysia IIRC) - damned if I can remember the URL
though. You may wish to take a gander at the archive and see if his posts
contain any pointers.

#2 Decide if you really want to be a competent webmaster.

#3 let the established shops take the strain whil you get the feel of
things.

#4 Good luck.

My son-in-law makes ~$500 a month from selling photos on
http://www.istockphoto.com/. Add skashkin to the URL to see his
diverse work. He's a chef so many of his photos are of food. Prepare
to become hungry. Wink

Wow. But then he's offering one of the 'istockphoto wants these' types.
I'm an animal and landscape photographer (and flowers), all of which
are on the "don't bother" list. sigh.

Guess I'm more of a postcard photographer than a stock photographer, eh?

I'm amazed at how many types of pics he takes. Of course, besides
food, another of his favorite subjects is my beautiful granddaughter,
the little blond hair, blue eyed cutie in some of his work.

I don't know why they wouldn't sell. I buy from iStock when I need
something for a website I'm working on. I didn't realize it until
later, but I even bought one of Sergey's without realizing it.

You never know. Sign up on iStock and give it a try. You will need a
very good camera though; Sergey uses a 12 megapixel Canon with more
lenses than I would ever want to haul around. I take pictures for fun
using a 3.2 Kodak autofocus, no changeable lenses and fits in the palm
of my hand.

I'm somewhere in the middle, but good enough for istockphoto's
requiremements: a Nikon Coolpix 8700, it's 8MP, but not a DSLR like your
friend has; I don't like carrying around all those lenses.
