Hi

I am current working in IT as a system Administrator for a community
org. I have just started a Diploma of IT Multimedia Integration and
Web Desin course at TAFE.
I will be learning HTML, Dreamweaver and imaging.

What I would like opinions on is; What to learn and which order to
learn them in.
I am planning to learn HTML, Dreamweaver MX but not sure about things
like ASP, PHP, CSS, Apache etc.

Opinions on what to concentrate on and the order others would do them
in would be appreciatted.

Go easy on me Smile

Sean

I learnt ASP, and I am a big fan, ASP.net is better BUT I would personally
learn PHP if I could...

CSS is VERY important... trust me, the better your knowledge of CSS the more
you will find creating good websites easy...

Good choice with DW (mx/04) but learning the HTML is still important...

Here is my advice:

1) Study HTML (it's pretty easy), and then look into CSS as soon as
possible. You don't want "old school" HTML coders to contaminate you
with their bad advice (i.e. table based layouts, using <FONT> tags,
browser-specific code, etc..).

2) Apache and PHP are free. If your curious about them, you can
download them and spend an afternoon checking them out. PHP probably
won't be worth looking into until your comfortable with HTML.

3) Become familiar with databases and SQL. mySQL is a popular database.

4) What kind of imaging are you going to do? If you have to buy your
own program, Paint Shop Pro 8 is nice. GIMP is a popular free image
program. The biggie is Photoshop, but it cost a lot. Personally, I've
never used Photoshop and never felt the need to use it. Paint Shop Pro
has always served me well.

5) Don't limit yourself to what you learn in the classroom! Play around
on your own. I highly recommend creating a personal website. Think of
it as a resume for when you get the degree!

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.w3schools.com" target="_blank">www.w3schools.com</a> has a lot of great tutorials. The awesome thing about
web design is that you can get everything you need for free (except the
graphic programs I mentioned).<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

HTML
CSS
ASP/PHP whichever/either/both
SQL

Treat mage creation/manipulation as a separate stream.

Don't even think about DWMX and its WYSINWYG friends until you understand
how to build a site. By then you won't need them anyway.

Please explain?

You can have beautiful graphics on your site but if you haven't put
the required effort into the design you should pack up and go home.

If you have crappy graphics but the design is flawless you are likely
to have a success on your hands. Unless its a site selling your
skills as a graphic artist or web stylist. Then you're done for.

Visual design is the final, surface layer in the design cycle.
Concentrate on the design, then add style.

Hi all

Thank you all for your advice, I appreciate it.

Trent

The imaging covers
Incorporating digital photography into multimedia presentations.
Use advanced features of computer applications.
Incorporating animation into multimedia presentations.
Learning Adobe photoshop and Illustrator.

I have purchased paintshop pro V8, have alway been a fan of this
program.

Sean,

Barefoot is right. These will teach you the mechanics of the programs.
But you also need the artistic sense.

Knowing how to do something is one thing. Knowing just what to place
and where to place it are something completely different.

you need it all... trust me.

Good (vistual) design is important, you wouldn't buy a barn to live in, just
cause the foundation is solid (yes you wouldn't buy a pretty house with poor
foundations... that is my point)

1. HCI is vital. (or usability)
2. Good coding is important.
3. Accesibility is fairly important (make sure its fine in IE and your 90%
of the way there, btw not many businesses would give up 10% of their
business)
