Is there a theoretical or practical limit on the size of an MySQL database
that is used to power a content management system (e.g. WordPress or
Joomla)?

For example, 50,000 pages, at 25K to 40K per page, would be about a gig and
a half total. Would that exceed the reasonable capacity of a MySQL database?

In terms of size, not at all - the limit is set pretty much by the
available space on your hardware. If any individual tables have large
numbers of records then you'll need to do a lot of optimisation in
order to get decent performance, but 50,000 pages isn't likely to be a
problem in that respect if the database is well-organised (and I'd
expect that the default setup for a popular CMS would be OK in that
respect).

A full mirror of Wikipedia is just over 8Gb if stored in MySQL, and
I've had that running OK on my server - the bottleneck there is the
complexity of the parser which puts a lot of load on the system.
