Hey,
I have a serious problem. The Hollywood portion of my website
gets ripped off all the time! I'd say about every 4-6 months ...
someone rips off my page(s) ....
And, when I include a script to hide my html - I get angry email
from surfers telling me how irritating that is. So, what's one to do?
I either lose visitors or my content! I'm damned if I do - and I'm
damed if I don't.
Just look at what I found today!
http://www.fortunecity.com/lavender/frankenstein/114/id24.htm
Then go to my TV section of my website ----->
http://www.allsitecafe.com/hollywood2.html
and you will see what I am talking about! I already contacted
fortunecity - but It doesn't matter - soon - another person will
come along and do the same!
What would you do in this case?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Paris

You need to make it perfectly clear that the content is your own and that
you will persue anyone who steals that content. That should scare off a
good number of the scumbags.

Probably more often - have you considered seeding your links so you stand a
good chance of finding out quicker.

and futile to boot.

As you've discovered it irritates genuine visitors and doesn't stop theft.

Have you considered a redirect script in place of the direct link? Has the
(possibly unfortunate) effect of keeping page-rank within your site but
makes it so much more work to effectively steal your content without you
knowing.

Here's a thought:
Use a CGI script to serve some of the key graphics from the most
frequently stolen portion of your script. Just before the script prints
the graphic to screen, you'd do something like this:
if ($ENV{HTTP_REFERER} =~ /yourdomainname.tld/) {
#print graphic normally
} else {
#print graphic that says "You are viewing stolen content!"
}
That would work quite nicely and make some rather ambarrassing moments
for the thieves of your content

Sorry to reply again, but I tested my code out and it works:
Check out:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.internalysis.com/test.html" target="_blank">http://www.internalysis.com/test.html</a>
Under "The Graphic" is a jpg that simply says "This is the legitimate
graphic"
View the source code.
Now go to
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.thecgistore.com/test.html" target="_blank">http://www.thecgistore.com/test.html</a>
you'll see a different graphic ("This is the STOLEN graphic")
View the source code.
Both source is identical - both use the IMG SRC as
"http://www.internalysis.com/cgi-bin/stolengraphics.cgi"
Here's the code to do it (Perl)
#!/usr/bin/perl
use CGI;
$q = new CGI;
print $q->header();
use CGI::Carp qw(fatalsToBrowser);
binmode I;
$mydomain='internalysis.com';
if ($ENV{HTTP_REFERER} =~ /$mydomain/) {
open (RFILE,"../legit.jpg");
print while <RFILE>;
close RFILE;
exit;
} else {
open (RFILE,"../stolen.jpg");
print while <RFILE>;
close RFILE;
exit;
}
Now, you can get a little more useful than the above, which obviously
prints only one hard-coded graphic by passing a graphic file name in the
CGI call, but that's pretty basic.
Enjoy!

It would not stop them from stealing the text content (all those links).
I had some pages ripped off once, looked into the source and found this
on the seccond line:
<!-- saved from url=(0043)http://www (the url)...
That's what IE does when you do a "save as".
They took it down after they were asked to.
This guy is quite brutal I found this somewhere in the source of the
mentiond stolen page: JIGGY STUDIOS IS PROTECTED AND COPYRIGHTED 2001
So he knows what copyright is by the looks of it.
I don't think there is a real sollution to *prevent* this.

No, there's definitely nothing guaranteed - after all, the content must
be sent to the browser in a usable format in order for it to be
displayed to the user, which means it's steal-able.
Have you considered a DMCA complaint to the thief's ISP ? Many hosts
aren't willing to risk the expense of a day or seven in court and will
simply pull the site if you can show a reasonable bit of proof.

Not to sayy ou will not find the sollution in the other posters comments,
but have you tried putting <!--copyright blah --> in the html?
And if you can hide code with includes, why look further, a few emails
didn't kill nobody as far as i know (or just don't reveal your emailaddress)
and you have the ultimate controll if you use the referer-check earlier
explained.

Try one of those page locking things. I forget which one it
was but just for S&G I tried to save one of those locked pages...
It was frustratingly impossible. I gave up.
Save page = nothing
right click = nothing
cache = nothing
print screen = nothing
and turning off javascript didn't help as then nothing showed up.
This would be bad btw if you have visitors with it disabled.
I don't have a clue how that program works but it works.
It was an interesting test to be sure.
Good luck,

no, i get the stolen graphic both times. you seem to be relying on the
useragent sending the optional referer header.

Rats, my bad - completely forgot referer is a useragent thing
OK, would SERVER_ADDR be a better method to track from (less help, of
course, for theft within the same domain or IP, of course) ?
