Post subject: Shopping Cart with SKUs
Archived from groups: alt>ecommerce (more info?)

I've tried Googling the answer to this question without success and I'm hoping
someone might have a suggestion. I'm putting together a shopping cart for a
company that sells decorated clothing, silkscreen and embroidery. They have a
catalog of thousands of different items each with multiple sizes and colors.
Needless to say their SKU count is through the roof!

I have found a couple of shopping carts that deal OK with what I call the first
level SKU, t-shirt, sweat shirt, twill shirt, etc. But they don't handle the
modifiers, size, color, and decoration. What I have found give you options for
the modifiers. The problem, for example is when the t-shirt - red - small is
out of stock. If I remove the "red" option no one can buy a red t-shirt even
though the other red sizes are available. If I remove the "small" option no one
can buy small t-shirt regardless of the color. Ideally they should be able to
mark t-shirt - red - small out of stock and still be able to sell the other
colors and sizes.

Two questions - Is there a prebuilt shopping cart that can handle SKU's with
modifiers?

Or

Is there a list somewhere of shopping cart vendors? I have found
earlyimpact.com, pdgsoft.com, storefront.com, miva.com, actinic.com, and
oscommerce.com. Are there others?

TIA
Dean

Hi Dean,

Check out Nexternal Solution's e-commerce software
(www.nexternal.com). Several T-Shirt companies use our software and
it handles the SKU level very well. It tracks inventory at the SKU
level and has the ability to capture write-in attributes for things
like the embroidery. Give me a call if you would like to run through
a demo or see some real sites that use the software.

Actinic can handle any number of attributes, and each combination can resolve
to a different SKU. Each SKU can have stock monitoring.

With around 10,000 sites using the product, pretty much every business issue
has already been encountered and built into the product.

Thanks for the reply Chris, I'd never guess that from your web page, but that is
why I posted here. Smile I'm downloading the demo now.

A product as complex as Actinic is not easily demonstrated via a web
site. Once you install the download, you will see a number of
products, ranging from the most simple, to some of the more complex.
Something not demonstrated out of the box is:

1. Quickbooks integration
2. downloadable content sales and delivery
3. UPS Shipping integration (both online and UPS Worldship software)

For demos of those, you might want to get in touch with a reseller in
your locality - or - if you don't need those demonstrated simply buy
online.

One thing also not well demonstrated, is the differences between
Catalog, Business and Developer. More advanced features
(B2B/Wholesale pricing and Quickbooks integration are only available
in Business).

One thing we've been coming across lately are clients who want to
develop more than one store - or at least plan to - for them,
purchasing the Developer edition has been the obvious choice,
especially if they require one or more of the advanced features only
found in Business.

Price run down in the USA:

Catalog - $499
Business - $1195
Developer - $1500

Remember - each of Catalog and Business licences are *PER STORE* -
whereas you can develop and deploy multiple stores with the developer
edition. Three stores using Catalog features and you're even - or two
Business licences and you are $900 ahead!

If you need more advice, contact a reseller near you, or us (we've
been a reseller for years - since before Actinic had a US presence at
all).

We offer Actinic and Hosting packages at:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://aaabusinesshosting.com/actinic_hosting/" target="_blank">http://aaabusinesshosting.com/actinic_hosting/</a>

Packages range from 25Mb to 300Mb - with up to 6 months of free
hosting on packages.

Tell me you only paid for the consultancy and not the product? It's an open
source application called osCommerce (see <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.oscommerce.com" target="_blank">http://www.oscommerce.com</a>), which
anyone can download and install for free, with the copyright info and logos
changed (which is a big fat no no).... You got ripped off.

Well..., sort of.
One CAN change the copyright info on the catalog pages, provided that
one has modified the layout and them of the pages "... to distinguish
itself from the default osCommerce-copyrighted theme". In this case, the
precious little has been changed, so I'd agree that the guy got hosed if
he paid for an entire application.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

You can copyright the changed layout, (as I did at
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.orlogix.com/store" target="_blank">http://www.orlogix.com/store</a>) but this was a stock oscommerce install, so
while it may not be a GPL violation, it's certainly a copyright violation.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Interchange, free because it's open source
and used by thousands of sites including Google's own store. It's seldom been
unable to do anything we've asked it to do, and we've developed literally
dozens of sites using it including ones with pretty sophisticated
architecture and thousands of skus. You can see an online demo at
http://www.icdevgroup.org/

Cheers
