We have setup a new server hosting SharePoint 3.0. This site is hooked up to
active directory for security. I want to expose the site to the internet and
I'm not certain of the best approach.

We do have another server with Exchange 2003 setup. Currently, we do have
OWA setup to be access via 80/443 ports.

What I thought is that I would have to setup a different port for
sharepoint, and have the firewall direct the traffic to the server. I do
want to have sharepoint accessed via ssl. If I could get some general
direction on this it would be a big help. And then I can narrow in on the
resolution.

Consider using a reverse proxy between the FW and SharePoint, such as ISA.
Configure SharePoint to use host header or alnternate port and set-up the
ISA rules accordingly.
