Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Hello to everyone,

i want to set up my own iis 5.1 web server. I have purchased win xp
professional.
My internet connection would be DSL.Does anyone know some TUTORIAL or BOOK
which could help me regarding the steps i must follow (ip,dsn, domain
name,frontpage extensions,smtp server etc).
Moreover i'd like to ask if it is possible to host multiple domains on my
web server

sincerely
thanasis

on the last question, i believe no. win xp pro is probably like win2k pro,
the webserver is crippled so it can not host multiple domains, use host
headers, or serve more than 10 connections at a time. if you need those
features you have to go to a real server os.

Yes, Dave is totally right.
On Windows XP, yout can only host ONE website at a time, but this with full
functionallity.

If you want to host more websites (hostheadernames are needed for this, if
you have only one ip) than you need to buy a server or install another
webserver ( look at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi" target="_blank">http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi</a>).

But to the rest of your question:
- conntect normally to the internet
- get at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.no-ip.com" target="_blank">www.no-ip.com</a> or <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.dyndns.org" target="_blank">www.dyndns.org</a> (or somewhere else) a dynamic
hostname and the updater tool
- copy your web-folder to the winxp-computer and change the base folder
of the standard website to the folder where your website is copied
- make changes to the "documents" tab in iis as needed (delete all
entries and put in the name of your start website)

For the first steps, this should fit.

Frontpage extensions are normally installed with "software" in system
control, equal the smtp-server(which must be configured individually)
