Post subject: Servers and boxes
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

One of my sites has been down for way to long and my host sent this:

At first, a network problem appeared, then the box experienced a few faults
which basically brought it offline.

It was eventually pulled to protect the server.

My question is, what is the box that is in the server.

None of that makes any sense at all.

That's the typical response of an pain in the ass tech who doesn't want to
take the time to correctly respond to a basic question with a clear answer.
For the life of me I'll never understand why it is that you have to go
through 5 employees to find 1 keeper!

I know the server you're talking about.

No excuses...but...
I had to run to my Aunt's home last Friday, the 28th. She's got Alzheimer's,
left a candle burning and I just got back 1/2 hour ago.
Nuff said.

The 31st of Jan..we got this Root Notice...
Seems someone from ThePlanet went into it, who knows why... yet...
ALERT - Root Shell Access (mis.your-dns-servers.net) on: Mon Jan 31 12:47:53
PST 2005 root pts/0 Jan 31 12:47 (admin.theplanet.com)
5 minutes later..the server went south for the winter migration.
Thank God we've only got a few there.

My Admin, and Support Staff have been battling with them for two days now to
get the freakin thing back on track only to find out they, somehow, still
don't know how, trashed the thing and tore up the kernel so it wouldn't even
boot.
Seems my Admin's been crying/begging/threatening..etc..anything to get it
remounted to another of ours so they could setup and restore data..but I
guess they got the typical...send a ticket...wait a half day...get not much
back much less ETA.

Seems they also didn't want to get me involved to not have me worry while I
deal with family issues.

Like I said, I got back about 30 minutes ago.
20 minutes ago, I've got 2 open Support Tech positions and 1 open Admin slot
also...In addition to the open Webmaster slot I created last week.

10 minutes ago, I got the freakin thing remounted.

Take 2 guesses what I'm doing along with two day staffers who're staying
late Wink

Watch how long it takes me what it's taken a few lackys two days to get
nowhere.

Let's see...

rsync -vrplogDtH /all-old/stuff /all-new/stuff

/credit /whole bunch-of-free-months

/destroy /the-planet

Hmm...Is the planet ThePlanet is... Uranus?

maybe they meant service rather than server? Hmm there's no "box" inside
a server. they're just regular home PCs really (except the look flat
like a DVD player and are mounted in racks with lots of other servers
generally).

I've tried to decipher what he was saying...the only thing I can think of is
that they were saying they were having a network issue which was eventually
traced back to that one server. That one server/box was pulled off the
network to protect the network. In that scenerio, it wouldn't be a server
"fault" causing that kind of an issue...more likely a DoS attack.

I just got this:

Your sites will be back up within 1 - 1 1/2 hours at the most.
We are now busy restoring domains now and will follow up with full
disclosure so it won't happen again and the steps being taken.

The short of it, one of our Network providers almost toasted the server
you're on.
Due to our Admin being on top of things, we were able to save the data and
are now redoing it all.

BTW, it's not hostingforabuck. Mike is just a friend trying to build a new
business so I give him a plug in my sig. Smile

I feel your pain and I sympathize. I think mine are finally keepers...but
its taken a long while to get there. There's still one tech that needs to
be reminded occassionally that "No" is not a complete answer to a helpdesk
ticket. Razz

I mean...jeez...what's so hard about it?
We run 13 cpanel servers, 7 windows boxes, dialup pops all over the US and I
have a hard time finding a stable crew who can do their job with a smile
when I'm not here.

Well, it's not that bad Wink, I'm just not in a good mood.
